Invitation Ettiquette

How do I not offend someone on a baby shower invitation. My dilemma is my niece who lives in Russia, is having her baby here in the states and her baby shower will be here. With all the airline rules and regulations we would like in lieu of physical gifts to request gift certificates or cash, but we dont want to offend guests. Please help!!!
