Releasing Butterflies Instead Of Throwing...

I have just recently heard about people releasing monarch butterflies instead of throwing rice. This sounds like a beautiful idea, but I can`t find any information on it. Does anyone know anything about it? Like prices? And how in the world would you give a butterfly to each guest?? Any help is appreciated. Thanks...

We released butterflies at our wedding 9/30/00 in Ohio.
The place we got them from was a high school doing an fund raiser. They are no longer doing it but what you need to do is have them delivered the day before your wedding. They usually come in some sort of envelope that you could give out to your guests or what we did to save money (and some of my relatives were freaked about having a live butterfly) is we made to big "butterfly boxes" decorated with our colors and some butterrfly designs. They were just the paper boxes they have at craft stores. I lined them with netting in our colors, letting the netting be long enough to wrap around the top of the box and make a bow. When I received the butterflies, I put half in each box. I think we got about 50 of them. I put a cotton ball full of gatorade in each box so they could eat. Put the lid on and left them in the closet overnight. The morning of our wedding I took out the gatorade cotton balls, put the lids on and tied the bows. The only thing I didn`t pay attention too was where they were to keep the boxes until after the ceremony. Keep them in the sun! If they are cold the get sleepy and don`t fly right away. The girls that released them opened the boxes and "snapped" the netting to kinda launch them. It was beautiful although more of them would have taken immediate flight if they were warm. We had a 1:00 outdoor ceremony. It would take pretty high temps and length of time to "cook" them. I`m sure any place you get them from will be able to give you instructions. I had initially wanted monarchs but when I found this place they had butterflies called painted ladies. They look like monarchs but are smaller. And less expensive so we could get more of them. Good Luck!!

This is a BADDDD idea. It`s cruel and, yes, the butterflies end up dying. Do you really want to start your marriage on that note?

I wanted to do the Butterflies also, but have heard some bad things about it. What I am going to do is blow bubbles. I got them from the Dollar Store. 6 for $1. I am printing out labels to attach to the bubbles

I went on line and typed in butterfly releases for weddings and a few different sites showed up with all kinds of information. One site said not to use painted ladies because if they go to the bathroom they expell red colored fluid, not a nice site on a wedding dress. You can check out www.butterflyevents.com or www.berkshirebutterflues.com. There are alot of different ones out there so check around and ask questions. Your best bet is with the Monarch butterflies, because I was told they don`t give off that red liquid. But double check, good luck.

I have heard horror stories of butterflies released at weddings. Mostly, that they flit around in the box for a while (which you can hear) then, they get silent (b/c they`re dead) and you`ve got dead butterflies in boxes.
