Becoming A Wedding Photographer
I am wondering if someone can help me. My background is in amateur photography...I took a few classes in college, and I`m considered the family photographer. Professionally speaking, I`m a graphic designer...so I definitely have an artistic eye. Becoming a wedding photographer would incorporate my love for weddings with my passion for creativity.
What do you think would be the best way to break into the industry. I`m not looking to make a real profit at first, but only looking to establish an awesome portfolio. I`d even do a wedding at cost! I have a really nice Digital Rebel camera that I could likely use.
If you want to send me an email with any info, my address is peliza89@yahoo.com. Thanks for your time in advance!

Advertising that you will do the wedding at cost would probably be a great way to start a client base and get yourself some references as well as a good start on that awesome portfolio. I know I`d be willing to give an ameature photographer a chance if offered a deal like that.
Any chance your in the NE Ohio area next April?

Why are you asking about becoming a professional photographer at a site like PartyPop.com? Wouldn`t it make more sense to discuss this with other professionals at a photography website? What do brides to be really know about breaking into the professional wedding photography business? That alone makes you seem beyond amateurish.
When searching for a photographer to capture a day as important as a wedding is, safe to say the majority of couples aren`t looking for (1) an amateur photographer with absolutely no experience photographing weddings (2) digital photography (using a middle-of-the-road ditigal camera, no less!) (3) someone so desperate for work that they offer their services for free.

Kris - Actually, I didn`t post my original message at PartyPop.com, but another site that directed it here. That site had wedding planners and professionals who used the boards. And to clarify, I`m not a "bride to be", as you stated.
It`s interesting to me that you make the assumption that "the majority of couples aren`t looking for an amateur photographer with...no experience photographing weddings"; because I`ve had several people contact me regarding services. People who are trying to plan their wedding on a budget. In addition, do you really know enough about photography to jump to the conclusion, "using a middle-of-the-road digital camera"? The Canon Digital Rebel is an excellent camera! And I`ve found that some "wedding photographers". So, it obviously is NOT a "middle-of-the-road" camera.
Finally, have you ever heard of freelance work? That`s what people do to gain experience in their profession. During college, I did quite a bit graphic design freelance work, and it`s only served to further my career. I learned more by doing, and people were impressed with the work I did.
If you don`t have anything nice to say, why waste everyone`s time posting a nasty message, Kris?

I am also a just starting a wedding photography biz, and I understand where you are coming from. I am having a hard time finding out exactly where to start. I did however buy myself a very nice Canon 20d camera and accessories so I could take Excellent pictures. If you get any great info on what to do to start, let me know, please. Also, I have signed up at https://www.ep-o.com/about.asp. It`s free and they give lots of leads.
