Get married in the country you are planning to live in. And get a fiancee visa for the person moving to that country. You need to do the fiancee visa first. I don`t know how it is now with getting married first then filling eith INS after the marriage(which I did) since the aftermath of September 11th. I am canadian and moved to the US.
If you are not sure about the paperwork ask hep of a lawyer to do it for you.

I am an American citizen getting married to an UK citizen. We have just about completed the finance visa process (called a K-1) for him which has taken 7 months.

If you want to live in the United States, please check out
Www.k1faq.com BEFORE YOU GET MARRIED. Please note that there is a different visa procedure for folks who want to get married and live in the US and those that are already married and want to live in the US.

I don`t have any information on Canada. Good luck!

-PS As an English speaking North American, there is little reason for you to hire a lawyer. Lawyers are really expensive, and the Fiance visa process, while complicated an annoying has been done by lots of people. There are tons of helpful internet sites and stories.

This is all very interesting. I am dating a Chinese girl. But she does live in America. So I guess that wouldn`t apply.
By the way, how is Canada, never been there.

Hi, I am an American, but got married to an Australian. We had a few options: 1. Apply with a fiance`s visa(while I still lived in the U.S.) and I wouldnt be allowed over to Australia until it was granted. The 2nd was similiar where you had to stay in the U.S. To get it, or the 3rd option(which is what we did), was I went to Australia on my tourist visa for 6 months(in that 6 months time we got married in Australia because we chose to live here) Then as soon as we were married we could apply for the visa, but its very complicated, you need to have lots of proof of your relationship. We had to open joint bank accounts, credit cards, save all our reciepts, all our bills, all of our bank account statements, all envelopes addressed with the same address. We had to get pictures copied from the time we met until the time we turned in our visa. It also cost us a fortune. Well we did the cheaper way, which cost us about 4,500 dollars, if we did the first 2 options i mentioned, it cost more, i think it was 6,500 dollars. Its very expensive and its very stressful. We got married in March, put the visa in the end of May, and its now Oct and we just got it a few weeks ago, so I`m finally able to work, but now that I can work, Cant find any work, Due to where we live. WHAT A BUMMER! It can be very depressing, but its worth it i guess, the reason we chose option 3 even though it takes longer and its a bit harder is because we couldnt stand to be apart any longer than we had been. Anyways, hope your visa works out for you!!!

Advice to any uk citizen wanting to marry an american apply for your fiocee visa in america before u go there as u will have to leave again and it will be declined if u r allready in the country appl for your work permit at the same time the fioncee visa app iss $140 the work permit app is $120 and it takes between 90 days and 150 days to be processed alternativly get married somewhere first then apply for your visa if u know where u can get married to an american without u having a social security no. And it is a recognised certificate please send me the details as it would berealy usefull for me :)

Good look guys/gals

The people that are here already and married, do you have your Alien Resident Card?? I know that it is really hard to get all the papers to get a Visa, but do not dispear there is light at the end of the tunnel. I was born in Spain and I married my husband over there, because he was military and when the goverment send you overseas if your spouse is a 3rd country national you have more problems, can not get a real job, I decided to became American, that way I did not have any more problems. I still love being Spanier, but I`m a proud US citizen.. So to you all good luck and keep those finger crossed.

No No No first of all you haave quite a few options but the one like best is the one where the immigrant stays where he is illegaly and they pay a fine of like 1,000 dollars or go back for a few months personally its cheaper just to pay the fine because that person will lose alot if they leave where they are!

In response to your message regarding marrying your American fiance.I am in a very similar situation myself.I am Canadian, heis American.I don`t want to cause you any undue stress, but,it is an EXTREMELY lengthy, and complicated process if your fiance wants to become a permanent citizen here in Canada. My fiance and I are going to have to give up any hope of him ever living and working here permanently. The application requirements for you to be able to sponsor your future spouse are very strict, and you have to earn a minimum salry of at least 35-65,000 a year to support him.I really hope for your sake that you do.I don`t earn that much, and I never have.I will have to go to a community college to earn a trade of some kind in order to be able to do this. This will take at least 2 years ,and then ,ofcourse,I will have to get a really good job. Also,if he or you have ever had a criminal charge, been detained or put in jail for any reason, you won`t be eligible either. There are tons of things that the canadian gov`t requires of the both of you in order for him to live here and work here on a permanent basis.we are so upset and frustrated about our own situation because we love each other so much and it looks so hopeless. We will still get married, but I guess he will have to travel back and forth to the US every 6 months and we will have to only see each other 6 months a year.Sept.11 really put a wrench in the whole immigration process for many people. The laws have been tightened to the point of strangulation for many of us.I wish the gov`t would have more compassion when it comes to people like us.But,it`s the gov`t so I won`t hold my breath.for anyone out there who is experiencing similar problems,my heart goes out to you all. But,try not to give up,true love is such a blessing, and anything that important is worth fighting for.Perhaps an immigration lawyer could help you a bit,but they cannot do anything to help speed up the progress. Application forms for sponsorship is available on the Canadian gov`t website.I have heard about something called a fiance visa,I am going to look into that too.Best of luck to the both of you,I hope it goes much smoother for you than us.Contact me if you wish.thesamplelady@hotmail.com
