I`m all for paying a seamstress to make you a dress. I hired a lady to make my wedding dress b/c I couldn`t find all the elements I wanted combined in one dress. I have a slightly Renaissance (usually looks pretty medieval) dress, and, as my seamstress and I were planning and designing it, I saw oodles of medieval style dresses in the pattern books she had. Check out the pattern books at a local discount store (Wal Mart, KMart, etc.), then find a seamstress who can help you. My dress ended up exactly as I want it, and it cost about half what I saw in stores.

Go to your local fabric store and check out the Simplicity and McCall catalogs. They both have several different Midieval and Rennassance styles that are simple and elegant.

Get on your internet and go to google.com type in medievil or gothic for your seach word or try another word that might work. I bet you`ll find more sites than you know what to do with. Another web search is askjeeves.com either one is good.GOOD LUCK!

If you are interested in having a dress made, I know a pattern that I think would work really well, it`s STYLE pattern #2255. The on I have I found at both JoAnn Fabrics and WalMart.
