Two words -- weight watchers. I am getting married in september and the day my boyfriend proposed to me i went and signed up. I have done weight watchers before this and have had great results (unfortunately my will power is not so strong). The average weight loss for the average person is about 1.5 pounds per week, i experienced more than this with suprisingly minimal exerscise. It is a great program and i believe in it fully (and no, i do not work for weight watchers :) anyway, i experienced great results and i fully believe it is worth the sign up fee. It nets things out for you and you dont have to obsess over counting calories. It is worth checking out. Lots of luck to you whatever you do!!

I am not getting married...but I`m just looking at different wedding sites...I like to DREAM about the day I do get married, if that`s EVER going to happen. But anyway. To the point. Weight Watchers is an EXCELLENT program. I was on it before, and was doing great til I decided to quit b/c graduation came up in May and there was too much going on. And I`ve never had the willpower to get back on it. But anyway, to the person who posted they quit it b/c of lack of money. My mom does it by herself, and doesn`t go to the meetings. You don`t have to go to the meetings. Just do it yourself and weigh yourself every now and then.

Hello,
I got married 2 years ago and worked with a personal trainer to get in shape. It worked better than I had imagined. My trainer had me follow the program in that book, A Bride`s Guide To Fast Fitness + Weight Loss. You should really consider working with a personal trainer and at least getting a copy of that book. Best of luck to you.

If you want to lose weight fast...try Hydroxycut. It works! I weighed around 145 at 5`6" and in a month and a half I was down to 120 and have been here ever since. Do consult with someone from GNC before you take it and then sit on your couch watch some good movies and sweat it away. (For faster results- I would workout also.)

I`m getting married in October (I think! Still planning!). We just got engaged at New Years, after our New Years guests went home at about 2 a.m.! After nearly four years, I`m dancing in the streets!
Anyhow, just like everyone else I`m trying to lose some pounds before i walk down that aisle. I`m currently a size 18. I`ve worked out regularly for several years and consider myself healthy, but I`ve been increasing my efforts. I have been following the WW Winning Points plan, and dropped ten pounds right away before Christmas, and have recently started losing again. I hope to lose about 20 pounds by March and then go shopping for a dress. I have a concern...I`ve read that many bridal salons carry one or two sizes of each gown, usually in the size 10 range. Can I expect to be disappointed and not find anything in my size when I go shopping for my gown? I know they run small, and I don`t want to miss out on that excitement of going to the salon with mom and the maids, trying to find `the dress` and finding nothing but tents. Does anyone have any insight here? Who is `plus size` (read "the size of most North American women`)and has been shopping for this all-important gown? I`m in Atlantic Canada.

TO everyone who is going out gown shopping, let me tell you about my experience, my wedding is in July and went shopping but the sad thing is every dress in the stores are sizes 10 and smaller. I want to warn you that if you are larger than a size 10 don`t get frustrated. I wear a size 12 or 14 and the first couple of days was frustrated.. I finally found a store where the staff was so helpful and when i put the gown on they told me how the waist and the decorations would look on a gown that was actually in my size. Also just a heads up that wedding dresses are alot smaller than your normal pant size. My wedding dress size ended up being an 18, so add about 2 to 3 dress sizes on to your normal size. Hope I was of some help to someone out there.

I also have about 50 pounds to lose, but I don`t believe any more than 20 of them will be gone by March, which is my deadline for finding a dress! Oh well, hopefully by September I will find myself needing alterations for my much smaller bod!

I recommend hydroxycut- it doesn`t contain ephedra, and it really works.
Also, drink tons of water. That is the best piece of advice you can follow to lose weight. If you have the willpower, try drinking only water. It`s amazing how many calories you lose cutting out juice, pop, and milk. Remember to look for low calorie foods and not low fat ones too- calories are what counts, not fat grams.
Lastly, celery sticks. Keep them around when you feel the urge to snack. Not only will they curb your appetite, but they have been proven to have negetive calories. So not only are you not gaining any calories when you eat them, but they are actually helping you to burn calories. Grapefruit has been proven to have negetive calories too, but that`s reallyhard to eat without sugar.

My best advise is first see a NUTRITIONIST!!!!!
She/He will tell you HOW TO DIET via eating the correct food (I`M SORRY, BUT WEIGHT WATCHER IS A JOKE, MORE PEOPLE GO OFF THE DIETS, THAN LOSING/AND STAYING OFF THEIR WEIGHTS FOR LIFE!)!
Also, they will tell you of an EXERCISE PROGRAM/REGIMENT that you can do for life (w/out any hardships.).
Good luck in your endeavors.

Seeing a registered dietician/nutritionist is a great idea, BUT, they are not capable of helping you with an exercise program. I would recommend a personal trainer for help with a fitness plan.
I actually bought this great book called A Bride`s Guide To Fast Fitness + Weight Loss and it`s written by a personal trainer and it includes fitness programs specifically for brides.
Plsu, it even has specific workouts for different dresses. It helped me a lot!

Don`t completely write off Weight Watchers just because it doesn`t work for you. I`ve followed it since November, not going to meetings or anything, just following the points. Using that, I`ve changed the way I eat enough to lose pounds. And it`s changes that I can live with permanently. I have cheesecake if I want it, just not every day and not a whole cheesecake.
But it does need exercise worked in with it too, so I go to the gym three times a week.
Not a joke in my book.

I lost 50 pounds in 4 months by running on the eliptical 4 to 5 days a week for 45 minutes each day. Then riding the bike or walking a treadmill. IT is a lot of work, but man it is worth it. I am now a size 5/6. Hope this helps.

Hi and Congrats to all! of course, just like everyone else, i am looking to lose somewhere around 50 lbs before the big day. Im a size 16 now and am dreading going to shop for dresses currently. Anyway, i started taking xenedrine back when the only one available had ephedrine in it. It worked wonders, i couldnt believe it! i was dropping lbs like crazy and i had a wackload of energy, then i found out how bad ephedrine is for you..yadda yadda. So i stopped taking it =( but, great news, they now have the EFX Xenadrine and it has NO ephedrine, so ive started taking that again and i am back to dropping the weight,,yayyyy. Just a few notes about it though: 1) do NOT take it and drink coffee. It will be way too much stimulation. In fact, im totally off coffee now which is great cause i hated what coffee always did to my skin and hair, and we all want to be fresh glowing peaches on our wedding day, right ? hehe =) and 2) don`t take it after 3 or 4 in the afternoon as you will not be able to get to sleep at night.
Also, one of the main ingredients in the xenedrine EFX is yerba mate which you could also try by itself. It`s a tea that you can get at trader joes or probably gnc or other health food stores and people have been drinking it for its health and weight loss benefits since the aztecs. Its also a great way to get off caffeine. It helps your memory, energy, appetite and general functionability. Good luck to everyone!!=)

I wouldnt recommend anyone talking pills to loose weight, the best way, sorry to say, is by exercize and just watching what you eat....go jogging, the first few days it might be hard but after a week if that, itll be a piece of cake, you`ll start looking forward to your runs. Just be sure you get enough nutrition, i lost too much weight for my body because I wasnt getting enough of the healthy foods. But when I did start eating right eveything was perfect! Running also creates a good time to think and clear your mind, it really does help with more than just loosing weight. With that and saying no to the deserts youll reach your weight loss goal in no time. Honest!

I`m a walker rather than a runner...I tried running for awhile, but just couldn`t get into it. My ankles hurt, I kept getting a stitch in my side.
You can get pretty much the same benefits from walking, you just have to go longer and not just stroll - walk hard!
I also have about 50 pounds to lose, but I`m not betting on losing them all by my September 20th wedding. But that`s OK, I`ll still walk down that aisle and my fiancé will still tell me I`m beautiful! :) I`m hoping to be down at least 20 pounds by the big day.

I`m getting married in October. About a year ago, I was 241 lbs. Now I`m down to 160 lbs and I have about 15 lbs. To go before the wedding to be down to 145 lbs and 18 % body fat.. Losing this weight is probably one of the most difficult things I`ve ever done. I`ve been dieting on and off for the last ten years. Finally I made a decision to put everything I had into taking the weight off. It worked! I occasionally take a weight lose pill, which allows me to work out at a higher intensity, and demenishes hunger pangs. I`m commited to waking up every weekday morning at 5 am to go to the gym, and work out for an hour. I change my workouts from time to time.
I figure, if I can`t commit to eat right and exercise, how can I commit to marry someone ( both are lifelong commitments). To motivate myself, I think of my future if I don`t take care of myself. My husband would have to deal with someone who is unhappy, unmotivated, and unhealthy. Also, as someone mentioned in an earlier post, I might also have difficulty getting pregnant and having a family. That is not what I want for myself or my husband!
If it`s important enough to you I think you`ll find a way. I`m convinced most people know how to eat right, they choose not to. Life is a balancing act, including eating.
Some of the changes that I made was that I eat whole grains instead of white whenever possible. Things like oatmeal, brown rice, pasta, bread) Try and stay away from things that are highly processed. Switch to diet drinks, sweetners instead of sugar, 1% or skim, low -fat, low-cal options. READ LABELS and pay attention to calories, serving size and fat content. I weigh myself every weekday and record it in a journal along with what I ate and how I felt and if I cheated, why. This allows me to track emotional eating and trends around my period with food and water retention. My time at the gym is spent with me daydreaming of the thin, healthy and fit me!
Force yourself to go to the gym. Sometimes I get there and have no energy to do anything but walk the track, but at least I went!
I always allow myself 1 or 2 days to eat what I want (within reason) then I go right back to conscious eating. This gives me time on the weekends to have a piece of pie of some birthday cake. Everything is in moderation. This gives both my body and my mind a break. If you have a bad day or a bad week, go back to your healthy habits. You wouldn`t give up on your husband if you had a bad day! Why give up on yourself!?
Ultimately, you won`t lose weight until the reason is more than for one day, your wedding day. Do it for yourself, for your future and for your future children. They learn by example and we all know how painful it is to be overwweight. These are all my reasons!
If you`re going to do it, do a job that lasts. Don`t tell yourself that it only tell the weddings done! Your just setting yourself up for failure.
On the side... Alfred Angelo has a plus line that is quite stunning. (Someone was asking) Someone also mentioned that your wedding dress is smaller than a regualr size. Pay attention though to what part of the dress is fitted. I bought a size 12 dress with an empire waistline, thinking that I would lose these last 15 lbs. And fit into it but when I tried it on at my present weight, I was pratically swimming in it. My upper body and waist are very small compared to er... My butt. I obviously didn`t take into consideration that even though my pants size is a 14, my upper body is closer to a 8-10. Now I`ll have to wear a push-up bra and have it taken in.
Good Luck to all of you!

I have a different problem. My lung cavity is so big my dress is barely fitting now. I am a music performance major and one of the things I do is HUGE breaths and breathing excercises. WE bought the dress a month ago and I tried it on yeterday and my ribs and lungs are almost to big for it. I am going to drop maybe 5 pounds but I`m not dramatically over weight, i don`t know how to fix this. I am going to stop breathing stuff until my wedding, and I`m not drinking beer or soda and staying away from white flour and stuff ....this is kinda crazy to me

I too am trying to lose weight for my wedding, which thankfully is 2 years away, so i have lots of time. Just a tip, you need to eat sensibly (cut down on carbs, but not out completely or you will lose muscle mass). About 1/2 - 1 cup of carbs (rice, potato) a day. Exercise, even 2-3 days a week doing some sort of aerobic activity and some light weight exercise (handweights are awesome and reasonable cheap - you can do most exercises in front of the tv at home). Swimming and aqua aerobics are awesome. If nothing seems to work, talk to your physician. There are medical conditions that can hamper weight loss (stress being one of them). Have her/him check your thyroid, pituitary, hormone secreation levels and vitamin levels. A deficiency in any of these areas will cause you to retain weight. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!!

Try the Atkind diet. I have never stuck to a diet in my life, and I lost 15 pounds in the first three weeks of Atkins. You can get all of the information you need off of the Atkins website. I really encourage you to try it, it works!

DO NOT DO THE ATKINS DIET!!!!!!!
The Dr. Atkins diet involves cutting out all carbohydrates from your diet. This includes pasta, rice, bread, etc. The problem with the atkins diet is this:
Carbohydrates are sugar. When you digest this sugar, it is used in a metabolic cycle to create energy (ATP). This energy is used during digestion, heart rate, brain function, muscle contration, etc. You use some of this ATP energy during all these functions and the rest is stored in your muscles (the ones you use for moving like your biceps and stuff) as sugar. When you eliminate all carbohydrates from your diet, you lose the intake of this specific sugar used to make the ATP energy, so your body goes looking for it in other places. And guess where it finds it? That`s right! In your muscles. Your body believes itself to be starving of energy and starts to eat at your muscles. You will lost weight on this diet, but it is muscle mass, not fat. To lose fat, you need to do cardiovascular exercise (running, walking, swimming, etc). You can cut down on carbs, but DO NOT eliminate them completely. PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM THE DR. ATKINS DIET!!!!! This is not the healty way to lose weight, doing so can hamper your physical metabolism and muscle mass for life. Talk to your physician about being placed on a dr. Supervised diet and exercise plan. I`m sorry to the lady that suggested this, but websites don`t talk about the bad, only the results. Muscle weighs more than fat, that is why you see such fast results. Get off this diet or you could starve yourself to death. (by the way, when your body gets all the ATP energy stored in your muscles, it gets it from other internal muscles such as your heart). Don`t risk it. Go to your doctor.

The Atkins diet does not cut out all carbs. It suggests you cut down on bad carbs like those found in white flour and processed foods. It encourages eating natural things such as vegetables, meats, nuts, dairy, and whole grains. You don`t realize all the added sugar in foods until you read teh labels. It mimicks a diabetic diet, cutting out sugars. I am not starving myself. I had wheat toast and sugar free soymilk for breakfast, a chicken ceasar salad for lunch, and steak and shrimp kabobs with mushrooms and green peppers for dinner. This is not unhealthy in the slightest. I do agree that some people go too far with dieting and do cause themselves harm. I simply make wiser choices and cut out most deserts and have seen wonderful results. You just have to be careful and diet within reason. And of course do cardiovascular exercise as well.

Chris, yes it is important to cut down on the white flour foods and such, but you do not get any of the required sugar needed to make the energy to allow your body to function normally. You eating sounds good, just add a little rice (1/2 cup or so) or potato. I never said you were starving, i said that you were starving it of one required nutrient. Ask any physician about the Atkin`s diet and they will tell you how destructive it can be. I know what i am talking about i work in the medical field and have seen people die of this diet (and they weren`t necessarily anorexic as one might think). Deaths can come from renal (kidney) and liver failure (the organs that make energy). Yes, eating too much white flour carbs can put on the weight, but, if you reread my above message, they are vital to the functions of the body. And, i repeat, you ARE NOT losing fat, you are losing muscle mass.

I too was on the atkins and had lots of problems with it. I also wasn`t losing the weight!!! the first 2 weeks I lost 8 lbs but then it stopped. I am in the health field as well so I asked one of the Drs he suggested SUGAR BUSTERS. It is much more healthier than Atkins. It allows you to have the brown rice, and whole grain breads, and the diet is not as high in fat as atkins. I lost 6 lbs in the first week on sugar busters. This is my 2nd week and i am down 3 more lbs. I know the weight may slow up (the book warns you of that) but I feel much better on this diet

I just found out the problem with why i am having problems losing weight. No, it isn`t because i am not exercising (i get 1hr min every day of cardio), no it isn`t because i am eating wrong, but because of stress! That`s right! I talked to my doctor about it and some tests were run, they concluded that a hormone in my body that is released during long periods of stress has gone haywire. This particular hormone causes the body to maintain and deposit fat on the abdominal walls. This is a simple problem to fix in the body, but apparently not diagnosed very much. I am recommending anyone who is having problems losing weight and seems to have an excess amount of abdominal fat to see a physician. You never know...

What is sugar busters? i have been on and off Atkins for about a year IT WORKS but you must be strict and I mean strict. When you eliminate carbs your body from what i have learned uses your fat as energy that is why fat is stored and you look leaner as a result, not muscle tissue how do you convert muscle into energy? you do convert fat into energy. YOur diet does not need excess sugar/ and carbs. I am a nursing student so I am somewhat informed. I have never heard of anyone passing away as a result of following the Atkins diet. I have now lost 5lbs in about two weeks but I have cheated here and there but no longer am I craving sugar. I am however going to join Curves I have seen my friend improve in a short time I was running three miles about three times a week did not notice much but Curves will work i am 145 and 5`6 I should weigh about 125..any advise

Kathy - if you`re only losing 5 pounds in 2 weeks, it doesn`t seem worth it to be on Atkins. You can do that with eating healthy and exercising rather than the extreme diet of atkins where you cut out everything. I think the science behind Atkins is very good - but dieting should be a lifetime change and Atkins isn`t maintainable for the rest of your life...too extreme. Good luck.

Cathy, if you do some research on the atkins diet (and no, not their web page), you will find out the dangers of the diet. There is a reason why the first 3 letters of diet spell die. It does not convert muscle to energy, i never said that, i said that it takes the ATP sugar energy stored in your muscles for energy which decreases the amount of muscle mass that you have. Your skeletal muscles store the energy and you can more easily use ATP already made and stored than having to convert the fat sugar stores you have into ATP, because they haven`t been converted before. When you are in starvation mode (yes, your body believes that you are starving itself of sugar) it doesn`t do what you want it to do, it conserves fat and uses the muscle`s sugar stores for energy. Yes, people have died from this, check back as far as 1970 when this diet was first announced. I`m not saying gorge out on chocolate bars and 3 meals of pasta a day, but 1/2 cup of carbs a day (be it rice, pasta, bread) will stave off your body from thinking you are starving itself. The only surefire way to lose weight is to eat healthy, exercise (3-5 days per week for 1+ hours cardiovascular), and eat, eat, eat. The problem with most diets as well is that they cut back on the amount of food you take in. Try eating 4-5 small meals throughout the day (it seems like a lot at first, but you`ll get used to it). Try eating (if you can afford it) organic eggs and meat (free range, they aren`t pumped full of steroids), lots of fruit and veggies, soya products, spinach (put 50/50 in salad with lettace), and cut back on your fat consumption (check labels, some salad dressings alone have 20 grams fat per teaspoon. I am not trying to turn people off from losing weight, i am giving some tips on how to do it healthily. Dr. Atkins diet will make you lose weight, but not the healthy way, and it will come back, following some sound advice from a health care professional and using some common sense and exercise will make you lose it in a healthy way and keep it off for life.
Good luck to all
