Totaly Confused Bout This Promise Ring

My boyfrined n i have been dating for a month n 2 weeks but we have been best frineds like forever and he`s so sweet and a romantic. I went to go hold his hand the other day n there was something in it n i looked n it was a ring n i ddint know what to do? he put it on me n said i`d always be his n i smiled n kissd him n then my mom saw it n told me that its a promise ring but i dont know if he means it like a promise ring cuz he never said thats what it was n people are telling me that its supposed to have our names or intials on it n it doesnt so is it not a promise ring?
