Wedding Location In Halifax Nova Scotia, CA?

My brother and his fiance are getting married next spring, and I was just curious if anyone might have some suggestions on where they could have the wedding, besides in a church or wedding chapel, he`s not into the whole church thing, so they have been trying to come up with a nice location to have the ceremony, Indoor locations would be most helpful, they were thinking outdoors, but who knows if it`ll be nice that day for sure or not, after all we are in Nova Scotia :) So if anyone might have some suggestions of locations in the Halifax, Dartmouth, Eastern Shore area, where they may be able to hold the ceremony it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

My sister just got married to a gentleman with the last name of Chester from Toronto.... And wanted something different. A beautiful little place in Nova Scotia approximately 25 minutes from Halifax is just perfectand is named CHESTER

You could check at the Town Hall of Chester, NS
- they have a nice old "hall", gazebo on the waterfront (weather permitting) etc...
- they receive a lot of requests as this little place is very romantic and right on the water.... But is also very touristic in the summer months.
- the people working at the townhall are just wonderful and extremely helpful
- just an idea to check out!

I used to live a 5 min drive from Chester..hehe funny to hear ppl talk about it like they are. However it truely is a very beautiful place to get married, near the water there are some fine locations, however u might wish to try Mahone Bay, or even check out the parks in Dartmouth and Halifax. I personally love Shubie park with its little waterfall and such, also Point Pleasant Park in Halifax has VERY beautiful locations to chose from. Lol yeah, i`m getting married in September and i`m thinking about these 2 parks myself:):) good luck!! -------`---,--{@

Hi there,
I live in Halifax...and am also getting married this year. However, I`m not interested in paying the high prices most Halifax venues will charge for a reception and services, and therefore am going to have a beach wedding out of town, etc. As far as your request though, I`ve spoken to a couple of people who`ve had their wedding receptions on Citadel Hill, in the fortress there. They have a reception facility and it`s a great historic location. Other ideas are St. Mary`s Boat Club, Shubie park (as one poster suggested) and the Saraguay Yacht club. Let me know what happens!

Hi Everyone,
Thank you Very Much to all of you for your help and suggestions, they would all be great places, But my Brother and his Fiance have decided to get married on the Harbour Queen. It`s a beautiful boat in the Halifax Harbour, and it`s only about a 1/2 an hour from where they live, I think it`ll be an amazing ceremony out on the water. But I will definetly keep those suggestions in mind for myself or my friends for the future.

We are looking for a farmhouse or heritage house that we could rent for a week that has a wrap a round balcony, overlooks the ocean and has enough room for a wedding of about 50-60 people in August 2003. Would like to hold it outdoors on the property......but need space on the balcony / indoors in case of rain!!! Preferably somewhere between Halifax and Lunenburg.... If anyone has any suggestions I`d love to hear them!!!! Thanks

Hi, this message is for Nicole who was looking for a farmhouse or heritage house near Halifax. I don`t know if it`s too late or not, but I was in the bridal show in Halifax last weekend and I met someone who has a venue like that. They are called Ever After Weddings and their website is www.everafter.homestead.com. Good luck and if you ever need any other help, let me know, I`m a wedding consultant in Halifax.

Hi - I posted here last year about the beach wedding, etc (I highly recommend trying it if you`re willing to risk the weather) but I wanted to let people know about our "plan B".

We looked into The Old Fish Factory in Lunenburg. Doesn`t sound like the most romantic spot, but it`s right on the wharf in the historic town. They do the food, etc and you can bring in your own DJ or band. The prices seem reasonable. And if you`re lucky, you may have the Bluenose docked right outside for your reception. Apparently they`ve done a lot of "high-end" weddings for summer residents and even folks who just want to come up from the U.S. And have a wedding! I saw some of the pictures, and these people pulled out all the stops (the clients, that is).

We were going to have a very casual cocktail reception with some light food. We were very impressed and would definitely recommend the location and the management.

Just an idea for anyone looking for something very different with a major Maritime feel.

I am marrying a Cape Bretoner and we would like to get married near Halifax to accomodate his family. I have checked out Inn on the Lake in Waverly but it`s booked. We are targeting September 20th, 2003.

My dream wedding consists of a seaside chapel (catholic) ceremony and then an evening cocktail reception at a quaint (but classy) inn in the country. I would like the chapel and the reception to be no more than 20-30 minutes from one another. We will be staying at this reception location as well as some of our out-of-town guests. Our guest list is 80 people.

Does anyone have any ideas on venue or chapel? I am planning this from Calgary, Alberta and it is proving to be a bit of a challenge. Your feedback woud be much appreciated.

Hi T. Michelle
If you`d like I can check with some Cape Breton friends...most are Catholic, and some of them have chosen to be married around Halifax rather than C.B. And should be able to make some suggestions. Hey, some of them might even know your fiance!!!
Also, this inn is run by a friend of mine. It`s not a country setting, but you`re guaranteed to enjoy your stay and it`s very central:

This is also for T.MIchelle. I am from Ontario, and I am getting married in Halifax. We are staying at Lakeside Inn for our wedding night. Here is what they offered me when I e-mailed them:
Honeymoon whirlpool room called Dreamscape Specialty Suite.

It has a king size bed, his and her sinks in the washroom with a stand up shower.

Conveniently, the whirlpool tub is in the corner of the room.

Beautifully furnished and warm decor. Complete with his and her bath robes, coffee maker, fridge, microwave, hair dryer, iron and board.

We offer a complimentary continental breakfast, free movies and so much more.

The rate on this room for 1 night is $275.00 plus applicable tax which includes flowers, wine, glasses and chocolates.
I thougth it was great, and booked it in advanced.

Hey T. Michelle!

That`s our wedding day too, and I`m a former Cape Bretoner getting married in Halifax.

Unfortunately I don`t have any advice for your seaside chapel or reception. Ours is right in the city, the church is near where we live and our reception is at a Royal Canadian Legion (which is really reasonably priced). You`d have to be outside of central Halifax of course to really get a country setting.

Hi, I have heard of people getting married at the Montibello Tower. I`m getting married at The Dingle(Sir Sandford Flemming Park) in July. First, call the Parks and Recreation (902-490-4539), and talk to them about getting a permit. It only cost us $80. Then the rest is picking a place there, and setting everything up. If you need to rent some chairs and stuff, then please let me know, and I will send you the information that I have. I am renting them from McFarlands, and I am in the midst of finding out if I want to pick them up, or have them deliver. Do you have a cake yet? Sobeys is doing mine for $100. They let me pick one from the internet, and fax it to them (I live in Ontario, but I used to live in Halifax). If you would like any other questions, or help, then please e-mail me. We are looking into the possibility of getting married on a sail boat but do not know where to look. Has anyone heard of a `provider` that may have packages for a small group of 10 or so in Nova Scotia?

We are new to NS and would like to get married on the water. Any good locations, ships, etc any of you could recommend? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Gary,

The Tall Ship Silva does weddings on board and so does the Harbour Queen and The Mar II. I think your best best is the Mar II because they do small groups of up to 46 people. If you want more info check out www.murphysonthewater.com or you can email me at whitehead@eastlink.ca.

Hello T. Michelle,

If you are marrying a Cape Bretoner, I would forget about the mainland and head right for the Island. Dundee Resort is a beautiful place for a wedding, and you can honeymoon in the Cape Breton castle. I`m not an expert- I`m a mainlander turned Central Canadian who is getting married in Antigonish, NS in October (quaint town not far from where I grew up) but if you searched the web for Cape Breton and wedding, I`m sure that you would find that beauty and frugality would be maximized on the Island. Lots of luck!

I agree about Dundee, it`s beautiful there. But the castle...if you`re talking about the one that`s near Baddeck, it`s quite expensive. While I don`t know this from personal experience, I`ve also heard that this particular place is not the most friendly spot to visit. There are many small inns and such that do a far better job of serving Cape Breton hospitality.

What about the Glenora Distillery? That`s also a gorgeous location if you`re looking at Cape Breton. Also costly, but worth it. :)

Thank you to everyone who responded to my plea for assistance.

After much careful consideration and research we have chosen to have our wedding ceremony in Chester and to hold the reception at the Oak Island Resort and Spa. I truly appreciate your messages and your thoughtful responses. They have been very helpful. I will keep you posted.

Does anyone know where I could rent a chocolate fountain? They are a big thing out west but I`ve had no luck getting access to one in Halifax.

Ps I will take the great hint and get Sobeys` to do my cake and possibly flowers too!

Best of luck to everyone else in their respective wedding planning.

Have you thought about ordering one via overnight delivery from a store that you know has them? It might be more expensive, but worth the extra $$. There is also water fountains for cakes that I was told that you might be able to get one through Tim Hortons.

Hi again,

My fiance and I went to a wedding show in Halifax in February, where both Sobeys and Superstore were giving out samples of their wedding cakes. Based on eating quite a lot of both *laugh* I would highly recommend the Superstore pound cake over Sobeys. It`s more moist and tasty. I`m not sure about Sobeys, but I asked about this - Superstore make theirs from scratch at store level, nothing gets sent in frozen or anything like that.

We just ordered ours yesterday, and they were so accomodating and friendly - I couldn`t have asked for anything better. We wanted something just a bit different than what was pictured, and the baker said it would be absolutely no problem to mix up a couple of designs to make it what we wanted.

Our cake is three layers on a cake stand (included, it`s ours at the end), with a basket weave design and flowers on the tops. The marble was the best in our opinion (although we`re both chocolate freaks), followed by the white, then the chocolate. We`re going with two layers of marble and one white. It`s big enough to feed 118 people, and it`s costing only about $150. So overall, we`d highly recommend going with Superstore for wedding cake! They`re not only yummy, they`re beautiful and reasonably priced.

Thanks for the info Kimberley. I live in Ontario, and I have to plan my wedding over the phone and internet. I couldn`t actually go to Sobeys and Superstore to try out their samples, I just based my decision on which would be easier to pick up on my wedding day. Thanks for giving me some information about it though.

Hi Sandra Evans!

Anything else you need to know about in Halifax? While planning my own wedding, I might have stumbled across infomation you could use. Let me know if you need a bit of local help, I might be able to assist. My wedding is in September, when`s yours?

There is one place I`d advise against though. Yesterday I went to a store called Parties `R` Us at West End Mall in Halifax. They sell all sorts of party supplies and wedding things. My fiance and I met online, so I was looking for a cake topper with an Internet theme. I didn`t see one, so I asked the two employees if they ever get them in. One of the salespeople was about 20 or so, the other in her 40s.

They told me no, they didn’t. I commented that was a bit surprising, since so many people meet that way these days. The older one says something along the lines of, “Well, those sorts of things usually don’t work out anyways. I know someone who just got married in March to a fellow she met online. They’re already divorced!”

Why she felt the need to share this information with someone who is obviously getting married and met that way, I just don`t know. I said well, it’s been about four years for us, and things seem to be working out so far . She replied that this couple she was talking about, they knew each other for a year before they got married. It was like she was suggesting my marriage was doomed because of the way we met.

By now her younger co-worker is looking sort of horrified. And she goes on to say that she knows lots of other people in similar situations.

I said, so, no one you know who met in more traditional ways ever ended up divorcing? She sort of shrugged, then said she guessed some people are willing to take a big chance on a marriage like that and some aren`t. I left the store in a huff. No way am I buying stuff there after this episode! Imagine, a sales clerk telling a potential customer something like this, when the customer is obviously getting married and looking for stuff about internet themes. How rude!

Anyhoo, that`s enough venting for now! :) Let me know if I can help you out!

Hi Kimberley, My wedding is on July 26, of this year. I think we have just about everything planned. We couldn`t find a photographer to fit out budget, so we are just going to get family and friends to take some pictures. I am going to use my sis-in-law digital camera to take some pics. That way I will know that I will have some pictures that Iike. I don`t take the best pictures.
Thanks for letting me know about that store. We were going to wait until we got there to get our decorations so we wouldn`t have to ship it there. I think we might just go to Penhorn Mall.
My fiancees cousin drives a limo, so that is our wedding present from them, which is a big help, and my mother-in-law is giving us a night at the Nova Scotia Westin for our wedding night. We have been together and engaged for 8 years (we got engaged 1 month after we met), and we are still going strong. There is a wedding boutique in Bedford (I think that`s where it is), that you can check out some of her things on-line. She might be able to siggest something to you also, or order it in for you. I don`t remember the name of the store, but you can find it in your search engine. You can let me know also if you would like some ideas, or suggestions for your wedding. I hope yours goes well, and I`m sure it will last a lifetime. If you have been together for over a year so far, and you are still getting married, then you must know by now that he is Mr. Right. I find that people who are divorced usually make the rude remarks about people getting married.

Hi Sandra!

Wow, three months away for you. I find the time is just flying by, we have about five months to go. We just got engaged in January and decided we wanted to do it this year, so we`ve been flying along trying to get it all arranged.

I think I did see that Bedford wedding boutique at one of the wedding shows we went to in Halifax. In fact, I probably have one of their catalogues in my wedding stuff, I must go and look.

I agree about the photographers, they are very expensive. We got one who works out of Dartmouth, and our pictures are going to be about $800. The photos cost more than my dress! But that was important to me, so we`re doing it although it`s sort of outside the budget. And she was cheap compared to some. Others started at over $1000 and just went up and up!

Y`know, even trying to do this on the cheap side, it`s still looking like over $10K. It is really scary how much this whole thing adds up!

I figured that lady was just bitter because her love life hadn`t worked out! :)

Best of luck with your wedding! The Dingle sounds like a terrific spot to get married, we actually saw someone there doing just that last summer.

Hi,

Does anyone know anybody that has gotten married at the Wedding Chapel in Dartmouth, or know anything about it?

My fiance and I are thinking of a Christmas Wedding. Something very small and inexpensive. At checking into a few things it appears that getting married is very pricey. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Debbie,

I happen to have a brochure from the Wedding Chapel here. It can seat up to 30 guests comfortably, or they will perform your wedding in any location of your choice. Wedding services may be on any day. Rev. Michael Hiltz is an ordained minister of the S.S.F. Inter-Faith Ministries and therefore the chapel is non-denominational. Their phone number is 902-469-5317 and their website is www3.ns.sympatico.ca/wedding.chapel.

I hope that helps and if you need any other info just email me at whitehead@eastlink.ca.
