Event Coordinator?

Hi! I was wondering if anyone could give alittle advice to me that might be helpful. I will be leaving the traditional work force in June after the birth of our first child ( horah!) and I was thinking as an at home mother - I could run a business from my home as an event coordinator, considering I have done this work for other companies for the last 5 years. I am very organized and a natural born planner so I feel I would enjoy doing this, but what are some of the down sides to this type of work on your own? I would like to start small and grow big of course, being at home, but I just wondered if anyone out there had any advice they wish someone had told them when they started at it?

Thanks!! :)

Jennifer,
You can email me at branstetter@isp01.net
I would like to talk with you while I`m in my planning phase. I am currently gathering a database of every kind of business within a certain mile rdius from my local area, but am also making note of websites that offer great deals on party supplies. I am not looking to sell party supplies, just want a reliable ebsite in which I can place orders whent hings are needed.

Anyway, thanks - look forward to hearing from you.

The smartest way to make money off events and have time you need with you child is to lease an event spacew and have all customers come to you.

Thank you eric, that`s actually a very good idea in my particular area since there are not very many banquet halls or places to use for gatherings and many of the people around here are trying to find ways to use space in ways it wasn`t meant to be used...theater lobbies for weddng receptions for example. Actually paired with an event coordinating business that could be very highly profitable also. It`s not something we could afford right away, but it puts a whole new deminsion on the long term aspect of this business idea of event coordinating. :)

THANKS!!

Hi, I am also interested in becoming an event coordinator and maybe a wedding planner. I would like to know if you have to do a certain course or have any neccesary qualifications needed to become one?

Hi Zen-
I am also considering becoming a Party Planner...but I am basically interested in Children`s Themed Parties...I want to do it all, start to finish (invitations to clean up)...I was thinking a 2 hour party (only cake and ice cream for food) and fun interactive games. No one has time to plan these and it seems moms are taking their kids to Chuck E Cheese and similar arcade places...I want my kids to enjoy birthdays like I remember. If anyone has information to help me get started that would be great. I know there are a lot of online stores to purchase the much needed supplies, but it`s the actual planning and helping at the parties that is not available.

Hi Denise,
It depends on what you are looking for exactly...if you want the big blow up bounce games you can usually get them for around $100 per hour from a party rental store. If you go online to the yellowpages website, you can put your town or a surrounding town in and search for party planning or party supplies and something should pop up. Those places almost always deliver, setup, and pick up, so you aren`t stretched in a hundred different directions. Party paper supplies you can get anywhere, local or online ( depending on where you are at), and entertainment, like clowns, jugglers, etc....you just have to search those services out. The yellow pages will help you online, but also try asking some of the party planning businesses in the area ( the rental stores) they have alot of connections they can put you in touch with. In fact, if you approach them right, you may work out a discount through the business that wil raise your profits on rentals whenever you use them, but be sure the rental company has a variety of things before you agree to use them and only them....consider your own interest first. :)

Julie-
Thanks for the info...but what I meant is that I am looking for information from individuals who are Party Planners and help individuals with their parties. I am sure I can find all the things I need to make the parties a success...but I was hoping there were people out there who have started a business like this (helping people plan `their` parties from start to finish). Basically I am interested in how they started and roughly how much they would charge for an event. I have a lot of ideas and it would be great to `talk` with someone about them.
Thanks,
Denise
