Sparklers At A Summer Wedding

Has anyone used sparklers at their wedding? I am getting married July 5, 2003 and would like sparklers...I`ve heard that they can be pretty smoky and make the pictures turn out like a war scene...

Any suggestions or advice?

Thanks!

Wow, I didn`t think sparklers where allowed in the U.S. I know where I live in Calif, they do not sell them anymore because they are to dangerous, you should check with your state to make sure this is still allowed.

I`ve used sparklers at a couple of outdoor weddings and never had a problem with the pictures being smokey. All the pictures were at night, so the light from the sparklers was just background light. The trick is getting them lit quickly. It`s best to light them from a lit sparkler. You also need to send several people with BBQ lighters to spread the flame!
Congrats, and good luck!

One of my best friends used them during the evening and they were fabulous. The photos had an ethereal effect which was nice. My friend said, though, that they burned holes in her vail. She recommended that everyone stay back a ways and be sure to have tons of lighters passed out to everyone so that they can light up simultaneously.

I am also getting married July 5th and will have sparklers at the reception as the favor with a match book. My question is does anyone have a little saying to attach to it?

Thanks

Hi-
Just a side note. You migh be married. So to speak of the idea. But, I recently attended a wedding that used sparklers and they burn fast so people had to keep relighting. And everyone was scared they may accidently burn their neighbor. If you use them just be cautios, stay ouside, make sure you run fast so it doesn`t get on your dress!!!, and limit the alcohol users to one sparkler- they tend to become a hazard!! Congrats and have fun!!

Another alternative is confetti fountains that simulate fireworks using a biodegradable confetti that can be shot into the air. A great effect for you to walk (or run) down the aisle at the end of your ceremony.

They are relatively inexpensive and you have a choice of types and shapes of confetti.

MANDY:

You could print cards that list your names and the date of the wedding on one side. On the other you could list your new address, a thank you verse, or even one of the verses read during your ceremony if you have one.

We are using sparklers at our daughters weddings, but we bought sparklers that last 2 minutes each! We bought a few that will last five minutes, but they were more expensive.

Our company sells sparklers, but this is not a plug for sparklers. I am posting because I have some wedding sparkler questions. We only recently started selling them, but have been surprised at how many people use them in/at weddings. So I am trying to find out a little more, so we can match our products to our customers a little better. Here goes: How long should they burn? (They come in various lengths with different burn times). What colors would you prefer? (they come in gold, silver, multi-color, some crackle or whistle, etc.). Does anyone have any feedback on using the ones made with steel wires vs. The wooden stick variety? (I am particularly concerned about "fallout", ashes, etc.). Lighting sparklers can be a problem. Although there are new sparklers out which you can strike on a box, like matches, they don`t last very long. Matches are hard to light them with, and impossible if there`s any wind. The little wind-proof lighters are good, but this might involve giving every guest one. Does that make sense? Just about everyone knows how to use a lit sparkler to light the others, but then you run into the problem of the time it takes to do it, vs. That ole sparkler just burning down. Are there any other considerations we should take into account?

We are having sparklers and matches as our wedding favors. A cute message is A Perfect Match then your names and the wedding date.

Last year I purchased sparklers at the local WalMart parking lot during the fourth of july week. They had a tent set up with all sorts of fireworks including sparklers. I don`t suggest the colored ones because they seemed to have more smoke than the regular ones. The prices were reasonable too. About ten bucks for a five pack with ten sparklers in each. Good luck to all of you.

I am getting married July 17, 2003 and would like to use sparklers. I get them around the fourth of july in my state (MD) cuz theyre the only legal ones, but in WV they sell anything and everything, what i would like to know is, if anyone has seen in the movie "My Best Friends Wedding" after they get married at the end, and they are pulling away in the limo, those high sparkler things spray up. What are they called so i know what to look for and how much they cost????

We used sparklers at my sisiters wedding last year. Worked great. Some helpfull hints. Buy WOODEN sparklers-there is less chance of burning your neighbor. The ushers where to give each adult matches and sparkler-allowing them to decide if "little jonnie" was mature enough for the fireworks. We placed simple clay pots (inverted) on the ground and placed the saucer on top (of the inverted pot), filled the saucer with sand giving the guests a place to dispose of spent sparklers and matches. We used plain large wooden matches since we were not sure if it would be windy, etc. It worked great and the pictures were great.

Brittany,

In "MY BEST FRIENDS WEDDING"
Those high sparkler things that spray up are called Fountains.

They are usually fairly inexpensive about 1-2$ each,
But I`ve seen the short burning short spray fountains,
(they burn approx, 1 min, are 3-4 ft tall and are typically 3/1.00)
But if you want the effect they had in the movie wedding,
They have to be done by Fireworks specialist to be set of all at once.

I just checked out this website called www.sparklersonline.com and they have a great selection. I just bought some for my wedding that will last for 4 minutes.

Don`t do it!!!! I own a wedding facility in Birmingham, AL and I let someone have sparklers for their wedding and it was sooooo smokey! you could not see the Bride and Groom, so I wondered how the pictures turned out.

My best friend used sparklers and they were amazing! The effect was extremely festive and the pictures were beautiful. When I get married I am definately planning on using sparklers.
As for the smoke, there was not any that I noticed.

As a wedding photographer, my experiences w/ sparklers have been positive. Not a lot of other options with nighttime farewells. With a slow shutter speed, the camera captures motion of sparkling and glowing wands which adds an interesting dimension to a festive send-off. Can`t stress enough how important it is to provide enough lighters so the sparklers are all lit at the same time. At some weddings, profuse smoke has been a problem, but I`m not sure if that`s a side effect of the `multi-colored` sparklers or the quality of sparkler or wooden vs. Metal.

I decided against the sparklers for fire hazard reasons

I`m having sparklers at my wedding, and I`m attaching 2 sparklers to a match book that has imprinted on it: "A Perfect Match, our Names, & Date" I know you can buy sparklers on the web that don`t give off sparks, I`m not sure of the website though.

What time are all of you planning to use the sparklers? I am getting married in a year and was thinking about using sparklers also. I am afraid that I won`t get the desired effect because it will still be light out when we exit the church (around 6:00pm CST). Any input?

Shelley,
Don`t bother with sparklers unless you`re using them at least a half hour AFTER the sun sets. Any time before that it will be way too light outside and the desired effect will be lost.

I am planning on using them when we are leaving the reception, instead of bubbles/birdseed/rice. Our reception is outside in a tent from 7-11pm, so it will be dark out when we are leaving. We are also going to have some fireworks going off right after the sparkler tunnel as we are driving away.

I am getting married Columbus Day weekend October 2004. I am having an outdoor ceremony and reception. I too am using sparklers. I thought of doing this because bird seed, confetti, rice, and even bubbles are not allowed at my facility. And, I got engaged on the 4th of July this year! Try putting the lighting of them in your program somehow, so that guests have a heads up that this will happen at a certain point in the reception. That way you can avoid the chaos of geting everyone togehter and ready for the lighting. Also, try buying some BIC lighters, they`re fairly cheap, a couple for each table. That way you can ensure everyone lights up at the same time!

Another idea for getting all of the sparklers lit at the same time is to place candles along where the guests should stand so they simply bend down and light the sparkler. Have your ushers go outside and light the candles before departure.
