I know you asked for info on making your own invites but I have another idea for you.
We also looked into making our own invites. I found some at Michaels, Staples, Office Depot, Party City. But when all was said and done even making my own would run me about $2-3/invite. Plus all the time and trouble.
However, I was still going to do it until I came across another type of invitation call "seal and send." These are invitations that come in the mail the size of a postcard with a seal. You break the seal and the card folds down into an invitation. These are only about $1-2/invite. With no time and trouble myself, they`re printed for you. I found mine at Rexcraft.com but I know lots of other places have them.
I was worried about them being "tacky" but I got some samples and I really liked them. I picked out a great card and was really happy with them. I also received several compliments about how "neat" or "unique" they were.
I know this wasn`t exactly what you were asking, but I thought it might help.
