Here`s was I did for my budgeted wedding, I bought my dress off of ebay (for $140) my fiance bought his entire tux for under $200 and there are a billion other dresses and tuxes to pick from there for relatively cheap. You can help with costs by using silk flowers (and they don`t have to be dried to be saved).
I hope my suggestions help

I didn`t set an exact budget but want to do my wedding as cheaply as possible since we have lived together for over 3 years and have 2 kids!! This is just the final step in "completing" our family. I`ve found out that you can do a very nice wedding fairly inexpensively. Mine will cost me around $5000 from start to finish. I`m doing my own invitations and programs on the computer...on wedding paper from wedding/party supply store. No reply cards, just phone replies since we know all guests (about 50) very well. I`m also making my own favours (candles wrapped in lace with ribbon and card)...cards & ribbon bought at same supply store, candles bought bulk. Shop around for DJ, photographer, cake, flowers....pick an amount you want to spend on each, many will work within your budget...mine have been wonderful. Or you can make your own bouquets, etc...silk flowers. We are getting married at a country club, reception at same place. No facility rental fee because house chef is doing the meal...buffet dinner, cheaper and lets guests pick and choose. Whole thing will cost me about $1000 including wine with dinner. Pay bar after dinner. Only having matron of honour & best man...cuts down on expenses for flowers, gifts, etc. Email me if you want more info...inghams@hurontel.on.ca...there are lots of little things you can do to cut down on expenses and still have a beautiful wedding. Good luck!!

Hey there I just got married in Sept and we did our wedding for under $2000.00. It`s fairly easy to do I thought. I purchased my dress for under $500 and it was absolutely breathtaking. We only invited our most closest friends and relatives. Had a awesome sit down dinner at a beautiful hotel. We did the invitations ourselves on our computer. Had silk flowers which still look as beautiful right now as they did 5 months ago. It`s easy to do. Just have to be thrifty without being tacky! :) good luck ;)

Make sure you tell everybody that you are getting married, once I announced my engagment I had friends/co-workers and realtives telling me where I can get dresses at a good price, and I had some of my mom`s friends offer to make the wedding cake and another friends` husband do the photography, remember beggers (or pricewatchers) can`t be picky so just be grateful for their services, don`t be bossy especially if you are getting stuff for free.

I helped my friend with her wedding. We wanted it to be special, but didn`t have a big budget. We did everything in two weeks! The dress was $300 at Davids Bridal, We used silk flowers. I bought plastic vases from the dollar store, sprayed them with the "fleck" substance that makes things look like stone. Bought a lot of going out of season silk flowers from Michael`s Craft stores and spent a little extra on some really nice flowers to add for drama. We found a beautiful chapel on the Hudson River and had pictures taken from our cameras at a Gazebo overlooking the river in Cold Spring NY. We used my van, didn`t buy a limo. I made "butterfly" theme invitations on the computer. My friend found a cd she loved and I created a beautiful label of her and her groom. We made one for each couple for the favor. I bought my dress (MOH) from the JC Penny Warehouse Outlet Center for $35. But the biggest money saver was the reception. We didn`t have one... But we did. Since she couldn`t afford a reception we decided after the ceremony we would go to dinner together to celebrate. Then I thought. Why not ask anyone else to join us. So I wrote it quite nicely in the invitation that if anyone wanted to share this special day, they could join us for dinner. I asked them not to bring gifts, just pay for their meals. The restaurant was on the River also, and we were oustide under the white tent. We visited ahead of time and told them how many to expect. The guests got to pick the meals they wanted. We didn`t have a band or DJ, but the restaurant owner let us play the CD for the dinner crowd. It was magical. It was memorable. We had ivory and purple, we had butterflys, romance, and it was cheep!!!!!

My wedding is also under $4000. Half of the cost for us is flying to have it in another state, if you are doing it in your hometown you should have no problem. For the bridal gown, go to Davids Bridal (i got mine on sale for $250), and get a veil on Ebay...they try to charge $100-$200 in stores, but mine only cost $18.75 after shipping, and it is long, full, and has pearls hand sewn in the bottom. She can also buy nice flowers at a store or flower shop, and buy the ribbon and learn to tie it nicely around the stems for her bouqet. This will save a minimum of $50. Hope this helps.

Got married in Montego Bay, Jamaica at the Good Hope Plantation Villa. It was gorgeous. We had 20 people in the wedding party (we used couples so they could stay together and it came to 24 including parents) and we made 26. We had 58 guests fly out - 75 including children, and make a vacation out of it. They set up everything and it included all of our meals, limo service, the wedding on the grounds and the food, drinks, band, flowers, cake and we partied hard. They were so nice to us. They included the rehearsal dinner and it was delicious. The cost per person for the 13 bedroom villa including the airfare, was $800. This covered their stay for 10 days, maid service, butler, chef who shopped and cooked our meals daily, limo driver to take us anywhere on the island and their tips. Our wedding was included in our cost but we wanted extra things so that cost us $3000 (Photographer, books, proofs, Video on DVD, Flower petals in the fountain, chocolate fountain and tropical fruit and my gown, veil and other accessories came to approx $600. My ladies went online to buy their gowns for $50 and they were plain and came with a wrap, I bought sequinned butterflies and hand sewed them on an my mother embroidered flowers on their gowns and wraps. They wore dyeable Payless sandals and it was beautiful. I had a dream wedding on a dime budget and it included a honeymoon with family and friends. We had our private suite so we were fine. It was nice and it was a great vacation with the family. We enjoyed a week long wedding and paid the band to come back 2 more nights for us to party again so it was wonderful! For our centerpieces, we had 8 tables and on each table was a Barbie & Ken in a gown and tux that matched ours. For favors, we had heart shaped lucky bamboo in personalized bud vases with river rocks for each couple. For our private honeymoon, we went on the QE2. I had a beautiful wedding and I will never forget it and our family and friends had a nice vacation and it was worth the money.

Shucks! I love the Jamaica wedding idea. It barely cost you anything and you got the honeymoon, vacation for family and a whole lot of extras. That is my type of wedding. Maggie, you wedding sounds nice too but I just don`t think I would like a winter wedding. Boy I can barely take the fall cold so the winter cold would be way too much but your ideas are great. I hope people can take an example from the fact that you stated very clearly there is research behind the bargains!
