Renewing Our Vows

We have been married for 10 years this year and we did not have a wedding ceremony with family and friends. What is better; a private ceremony during a vacation or a wedding type event? What is considered appropriate or acceptable for renewing your vows? I can`t find any info on this. Would love to have a themed event so everyone could participate and would also like to have an opportunity to get "dressed up" for a big day. We have two sons, 8 and 5, which I would like to include. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks - Maria

Well I think I`m in the same boat. I`ve been married for 7 years
And looking at reaffirming our wedding vows. The first time it was a elope kind of thing and I missed out on all of the wedding stuff except the groom. We are planning a September wedding this fall 2002. And despite that both of had been married before, we were very skeptical about a wedding ceremony. Us getting married by the Church since we are catholic involved us annulling our previous marriage. But we`re going for it. I selected a a chiffon ecru informal gown, Which I am making myself, its a very simple pattern
Cost me 60.00. Its a very elegant flowing gown.
, I am not wearing a veil or train. I `m going to use a small simple rhinestone tiara. For my wedding ceremony, I `m looking at keeping it simple, I will be having a unity candle, which we both are lighting with our baptismal candles. I t will be a regular catholic ceremony, I am including my two boys, the smallest as ring bearer, and my oldest son, will stand as my husband`s best man. He also has a gift for singing and playing the guitar, so he will be doing that. I am incoporating some hispanic traditions like the lasso and the arras. And leaving my bouquet to the blessed virgen.our witness are our two closest spiritual friends. Who really are taking the role of bestman and matron of honor. I selected
One personal attendent to help with the hostessing, the planning she`s been my friend for years.
I am trying to keep it simple elegant and intimate.and i want to keep this a family ceremony as much as a reaffirmation of our vows, I bought both my sons a medallion of the sacred heart of Jesus ,since a big part of my ceremony is
Consecrating our family to the sacred heart of Jesus- this has been a very good idea ,because we all have been preparing for this spiritually individually and as a family.
Planning this day has involved everybody, we generally have
A fall theme- focusing on abundance and nature, we used
My husband`s favorite colors dark plum, and navy. The boys
Found a qoute from the velveteen rabbit that they wanted to use for the invitation and programs so thats in my theme,
Candles is also part of our theme as we all we all become lights , to share god`s love with everyone.
So the favors are candles with a label of the velveteen rabbit shaped label with a special poem.
And our wedding date and the family name.
Flowers are very minimum, I`m more into the wheat grain spikes, berry bushes, and some black eyed susans and some ivy.......very mellow. The guest table I am using a
Framed mat with a picture of a family picture instead of a guest book, people can sign it and I`ll frame it later. I also
Am making a centerpiece pillar candle and I am framing small picture of everyone through the years different shapes .
I have a simple basket I want to use for the programs.
For the reception we decided to take our party to a restaurant and celebrate their, simple, they are allowing us to bring some decorations, such as the guest table, the unity candle arraingement to sit at the main table, some simple
Candle centerpieces we are making out of 2 glasses one for the votive inside the decorated one with pressed leaves.
The velveteen rabbit, by the cake table, which we
Decided on a variety, such as a carrot cake layer, a choclate layer with berry icing, and the last will be a butter pecan with almonds.....It will be
A cascading tier 3 layer and flat. We currently are
Working on the toppers one for each layer, the top layer will have a simple glass cross with silver bands on it and2 hearts,
The next layer well have a small oval pewter framed picture of our family. And the bottom we were thinking of having a votive candle in a votive cup with a fall spray of berrys. The frosting is a butter cream and we want berries through out the cake. The choice of the restaurant was a democratic
Issue we voted on it. We also will host a open house the next morning for breakfast, usually mexican weddings go on all night we`ve modified that at the breakfast we`ll serve some
A mexican dishes , do opening of the gifts, and also break a pinata with the children.and just have fun.
A reaffirmations of vows can be anything you wanted to be, the good thing is you`re already married, you simply can focus on making it special and celebrate what your love has already created a family.
I am taking formal portraits of our family and using them,
The little details the floral, the favors, the decorations and the
Printing of the napkings the invitations I`m doing all that myself
I will use a photographer and videographer for the ceremony
Only, but I like the idea of putting out 5-6 cameras on the tables and have the guest take pictures of the reception.
I hope that I can pull off making traditions for my sons,
And reflect my simple fun graceful personality, We are all
Working at celebrating the love that Jesus gives each of us
To share with one another. I`m trying to help the boys see
That a nice wedding doesn`t need to be over the roof, with all this wedding gala prices ect. Its simple to miss what is the purpose of marriage is, I feel strongly it should be a reflection
Of who we are, you celebrate what is important
And you do it simply with god`s grace and with in your means.
I am working on a $1000. Dollar budget. So using our gifts of creativity and sticking to whats important will mean more to me than any expensive hoopla, working as a family really
Gives me joy that we are doing this. So have faith, HOpefully
I`ve encouraged you a little . Gods blessings to you. Maria
Feel free to email me if you wish.

My husband and I will celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary this July. We have to deciced to renew our vows to commemorate our anniversary. We are on a tight budget but still want to do something special with friends and family. We have decided to have a simple vow affirmation with a JP at our annual 4th of July picnic and pool party. The idea has evolved into having a patriotic theme and sending invitations to our guests to wear "formal swimwear". So far we have decided on tuxedo printed T shirts for my husband and our two sons(best men and ushers) and a white lace sarong skirt cover-up over a black bathing suit for myself and my daughter who will be my maid of honor.Red white and blue leis will be given to each guest as they arrive. The barbeque will begin immediately after the champagne toast and possibly a special dance. We are toying with the idea of a DJ and dance floor.I am a big scrapbook fan and would like to do a small album with a favorite photo from each year we have been married.
I have to say that I am really enjoying the planning process - it is fun and anything goes. Our wedding was very formal with a church ceremony and sit down dinner at a fancy restaurant. I t was very stressful and I always said it would have been easier to elope!
I too have been searching the internet for information and inspiration but have not found too much concerning vow renewals. Please let me know of any websites that may be helpful.
Thanks,

We are planning to renew our vows after 25 years of marriage. We had a wonderful wedding ceremony 25 years ago. We need ideas on the sequence of events during the renewing of vows ceremony. We would like a sample program.
