Should gifts be given at an Engagement Party?

I gave an engagement gift to my niece and her future groom. He said at the engagement party that he would have to let our niece`s side know that gifts should be addressed to the man first and then to the woman. Example: To Nick and Lauren and not to Lauren and Nick. Is this true?
