Cake Topper

The wedding is 05/14/2005, no theme but my colors are plum, gold and ivory

You could get some fresh flowers for your cake, (or keep your eye out for some fake flowers that you like the look of on their own) maybe some ivory colored roses. Also, if you really look you might be able to find some kind of cake topper that is not really gaudy, I felt the same way and had almost given up on the idea of a cake topper, but i eventually found one that was definitely me, it just takes some wading through the yucky stuff and looking at the detailed pics.
