Wedding March

A few years back, a pastor refused to marry a friend of mine to the Wedding March, because he said it was included in a rape scene of some play. Can anyone confirm this?

"There are 2 pieces of music which I do not permit, even though many regard them as traditional. They are the Wedding March from a Midsummer`s Night Dream by Mendelssohn, and The Bridal Chorus from Wagner`s Lohengrin"

Yeah for the pastor! As the link in the last reply says, the Wedding March (or "Here Comes the Bride") is from Richard Wagner`s opera Lohengrin. The scene in which the music appears does not involve rape, but the marriage it accompanies is doomed because of a broken promise. Not exactly the sentiment with which one would want to start a marriage. My mother and I have played/sang at many weddings and we both try to discourage people from using this piece.

There are too many possibilities to list here. One of the most popular (though overused if you ask me) is Pachebel`s Canon in D. Another popular one is "The Prince of Denmark`s March" by Jeremiah Clarke (also known as "Trumpet Voluntary" and attributed to Henry Purcell).

A friend of mine recently used a piece called "Donna nobis nomine" that worked really well (the music is by Patrick Doyle and it`s from the Kenneth Branagh film version of Henry V).

The University of Virginia has a good list of suggestions (though it does list the inappropriate Wagner and Mendelssohn pieces mentioned in previous messages) at http://www.lib.virginia.edu/MusicLib/collect/wedding.html

Another excellent source is the Ultimate Catalog of Wedding Music at http://www.weddingmusicsource.com/muscat.htm (there is a fee to purchase the catalog, though).
