Since buying an engagement ring is a joint venture, tell him what you would like to do. I, myself, would not spring an engagement ring upon my fiance without letting him know my intentions. There are many nice rings that would compliment a wedding band. Unless he dead set against jewelry, I bet he would be glad to oblige you. It sounds like a great, fun and sentimental idea.
