Hi Christine,
I found a couple of great sites with instructions on making your own veil, they answer a lot of questions and some give you step by step instructions on how to make your own veil. Give me your e-mail address and I will forward the sites on to you!

If you`re not set on making your own, I wanted to let you know that you can get great veils on ebay for a great price.
I got a beautiful, brand new, cathedral length (107") veil on ebay for $15, including shipping.
I wanted a long veil but refused to pay the $250 the bridal shop was asking. So, I started looking into other options, like making my own. I found that I couldn`t make my own for cheaper than $15.
Anyway, the veil was gorgeous and when I tried it on the bridal shop with my dress everyone was complimenting me on how beautiful it was. Ironic!

I would like to know how wide the material should be before gathering to attach to the headpiece

Marlene-
It all depends on how full you want it.....for the veils that i make i don`t trim the width off at all. I just use it straight from the bolt of tulle. Remember you can alway buy more tulle and do it again and still spend less than buying one from a bridal store.

Hey, I work at David`s Bridal, take it from me - veils are expensive! If you can make your own veil - more power to you. I`m getting married this year, and I`m going to try making my own veil too. This website`s the best I`ve found for instructions on how-to. It`s got good pictures too. BTW - joann fabric`s has bridal illusion tulle for something like $2.97 a yard. You must get bridal tulle, it`s different from the $0.77/yard tulle at Wal-Mart (believe me, I was tempted too!) if you get their adverts, there are coupons for 40 - 50% off one purchase. Get on their mailing lists, and wait a bit to make your veil, until you get those adverts. It`s worth it!
