Donating My Wedding Gown........
Does anyone know of any charities to donate my gown to? I would rather give it to someone who really needs it than to sell it.

Carrie,
I would not donate your gown to any of your local thrift stores definitely! They sell wedding gowns for $500 - $600 when they received them free. I don`t know of any organizations, but... I was thinking that you could do something like raffle the dress off to the most deserving bride-to-be. You could even post it on a board like this and have them write in 500 words or less, why they deserve the gown.
Just a suggestion - but... It`s glad to know there are still thoughtful people in this world.
GOOD LUCK!

You can donate it to Brides Against Breast Cancer. They give the gowns to Brides with Breast Cancer.

Sorry, they sell the gowns and the money goes to people with Breast Cancer to make a dream come true. I donated my gown to them and it was a great thing to do.

If your ultimate goal is to GIVE your gown to someone that deserves it, yet can`t afford it - I wouldn`t recommend giving it to an organization that turns around and sells it. I`m sure that they try and sell the dress for as much as they can, which would be defeating the purpose of your original idea. I know they are a great organization, I have had 4 people in my family lost to breast cancer, I volunteer all year long and I am dedicated to wearing pink every day this month in honor of breast cancer awareness. I think that if you are going to GIVE your dress away, you should GIVE it away.
To those of you that are thinking I must want the dress or something... You couldn`t be more wrong. I am married, and have been for 8 years. I just think it`s a great idea.

I like Mika`s idea. It is a tax break, they sell it but they turn around and use the money on people with breast cancer. Being that I have breast cancer and am fighting it now, I am thankful for people who have donated to the organization. They are not looking to make a profit, they are looking to help in other ways with that donation. Even if not with them, there are other organizations that you can donate the gown to.

I agree that the idea to donate it to the Breast Cancer organization is a great one. Thanks for that great idea! I am going to get my gown together and donate it. No matter what, you are giving it away and even if they sell it, so many people have gained something from it and I would be glad that my gown was able to do that. Thanks for the idea!!!

That is a wonderful idea. I had no idea that they do this. Fran, I will surely donate the gown and prayerfully you will get through this. I am glad to read this post.

I would think that giving the gown to the Breast Cancer Foundation is giving it to someone who deserves it. They are selling it to give the money to people with cancer. I can`t think of a more deserving organization. I never knew this wish organization was around. I would have told my sister about it. I am going to pass the word.

Lori it really doesn`t matter how much you donate your time to an organization and if wear pink every day of your life. They may sell the gown but they use that money for people who have breast cancer like me. I was also able to see my neighbor get her wish before she died because of people who donated their gowns. They do not make a profit. These organizations may sell the gown but they do so many things with the money. I can`t believe that people would tell people not to donate something to a program that is doing so much work and you as a volunteer of this organization (if you really are) know how much they rely on donations. So many people benefit from this program. Mika, i am thankful every day for people like you who are not selfishly telling people not do do something that will benefir hundreds of women like me. It`s because of people like you that I strive to beat this every day! Please think about donating your gowns. I thank all of you who have stated that you would do it, it makes me so happy to see that there are so many caring people out there. Thanks to you guys & God Bless.

I did not intend to offend anyone, I have a past, present and future with breast cancer and it`s organizations. For you to tell me that it doesn`t matter that I volunteer was down right rude!! I do more than volunteer, I do more than wear pink. I am involved with several organizations that raise money on a regular basis for the research of breast cancer, including my church. I didn`t find it necessary to include a complete resume with my response.
I also was not telling her that donating the dress was something that she shouldn`t do. It was just my opinion that if she wanted to give the dress to a deserving woman without making a profit - then she should indeed give it away. Nothing more, nothing less. I was once a victim of donations - I donated an old vehicle to an organization that I was told helped single mothers provide transportation for their children. Only to find out that they turned around and sold the car I donated at an auction and the amount of money that they in fact give to these single mothers was minimal. So, I give when I choose to give, and I donate when I want to donate.
My response was not taking away from cancer survivors at all, and I hope those that truly read my message understand my feelings.
Once again, volunteering does make a difference - there are many cancer survivors that don`t have family or friends and that hour that you spend with them makes a BIG difference in their lives!!

I am going to stop leaving messages on this board. I gave her an idea and it seems like it turned into a bash party. I wish I could go back and just never post anything on here. I read Lori`s post and it was her opinion just as it was my opinion to leave what I left. There is no right or wrong answer here people. It was a suggestion just as hers was a suggestion. You all have a great life. I think I will try to keep my opinions and help to myself.

Mika,
Please don`t - I always love to read your comments. I see you do understand how this forum works! It was only an opinion, nothing more nothing less.
Anyway, I do not have the heart to bash people and it really hurt my feelings to read that reply, which is why I felt the need to respond.
No bad feelings here though. You have great advice to offer, and it is besides the point whether I agree with you or not - it`s great to hear another point of view.
