I don't know what kind of sense of humor your boyfriend has, but I threw a really great b-day party for my husband Greg's 30th. It was like a kids b-day party with a western theme (Greg likes country-western music). I got some cowboy paper plates and matching decorations, hired a western clown, and even those photographers who bring a pony for the kids to have their photos taken while they are sitting on it (the adult guests posed beside the pony for the pictures). I served hot dogs, hamburgers and a sheet cake. It was silly, but it was so easy and everyone had a great time--especially my husband.

Here's what I did when my boyfriend (now husband) turned thirty. It's not wacky or unusual, but it was a lot of fun.

I reserved a section in a nightclub known more for happy-hour mingling, oldies dancing and wacky entertainment than for being a meet-market. This section included a section of the bar. For the first three hours of the party it was an open bar for our guests.

Although the nightclub "roped off" the area, I hired a balloon service to really dress the area up with baloons, streamers and banners. I had a photo-cake made (this was back when this was a new and different thing.) One of his friends who is an artist made a giant drawing of him on a poster and during the party everyone signed it. He still has it! There are services that will do something similar for you.

The party was a big surprise. All he knew is that I was "taking him out for his birthday." I picked him up weaing a long black coat over my party dress. I had him use a sleep mask as a blindfold and picked him up in a limo! (This may seem over-the-top, but this way we could both drink all we wanted because the limo also took us home afterwards.) I led him into the nightclub, and when he saw all of our friends was he ever surprised!
