Food During Reception-For Guests That Drink

Hi, i was wondering if anyone thought this idea is stupid for my wedding. We`re planning on ordering pizzas at around 10:30 p.m for our guests, there will be alcohol at our reception which will end at 1 a.m. So we thought giving them a late night snack might help them not drink so much alcohol and risk them driving drunk. We are having a dinner at around 5 p.m. So i thought this would be cool to do for our guests? what does everyone think?

In my expierence, if you get people to calm down and eat something after the night of insane drinking and parting, they`re better off. I think some people would appreciate food and coffee at the end of "festivities" rather in the middle. The best part- guests can hang out, cool down, and it gives them a chance to see who`s going to need a ride. I come from a 24 hour town, so I`m used to being out clubbing at 11 pm, get drunk, dance it off until 3am, and then go get some kind of food that`s within walking distance with my buds. (My idea of a night out might be a bit harsh for most people) Personally, I love the idea. It`s perfect incentive to get your friends to REALLY enjoy your night WITH you.

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that it is the amount of sugar in your blood that affects how the alcohol reacts in your body (I`m a Bachelor of Nursing Student - 3rd year). My impression (from bio class) is that when you eat (or have eaten recently), because this raises the amount of sugar in your blood that the alcohol (also a sugar) when ingested takes longer to metabolize because it is a more complex sugar than your average food sugar. Because of this, the liver breaks down the easy sugars first (the food sugars), giving the alcohol more time to just be disposed of instead of actually needing to be metabolized (used for energy). Basically, you pee it out before you feel a lot of the effects of the alcohol. Thusly, one who is drinking should eat as they need the food sugar to stay more sober. They also should increase the amount of water they are drinking because this will also help the alcohol to be peed out with it. I fully agree with you providing food for your guests. I would also recommend (if you`re worried - as we were as well) providing an opportunity for rides home (you may want to see if cabs will give your guests a deal, arrange for DD`s, etc). We recommened to our guests the hotel across the street from our wedding reception hall so that there is no need for them to even drive at all. Anyways, I hope that this helps. Good luck with your planning.

PS.
Just to elaborate though, just because one is eating while drinking doesn`t mean they won`t get drunk, just that it will take more alcohol to do so and the effects will run off quicker. Also, ANYONE who has been drinking (even if only one drink) should NEVER DRIVE within 4-6 hours after the last drink (add more time for the more drinks you`ve had). Remember, it`s not just their lives at risk, but the lives of innocent people too. I would HIGHLY suggest that you encourage your guests to make smart decisions around drinking and driving.

First of all is your reception really going to be 8 hours long??????
Second of all, feeding pizza to drunk people AFTER they get drunk doesn`t make them less drunk. It just makes them not hungry drunks. You have to make food available while they are drinking, afterwards doesn`t sober anybody up.
