Help! I Need Party Ideas!
My husband & I are having a party for my daughter in September & I need to start planning NOW! We'll be celebrating 3 events at once: high school graduation, 18th Birthday & "Going Away," (she's leaving for the Air Force later that month). We're having a DJ in the evening and we'll be outdoors during the day. There is a place for basketball, horseshoes & volleyball. My daughter is afraid it will be boring and her friends either won't come or will stay for only a short time. How can I show them a good time without alcohol involved? Oh, almost forgot...I'm looking for decorating ideas also. Thanks!

Jinny,
My suggestion would be a LUAU. Your DJ should be able to play some great beach music, I have a list of some great songs if you need it. You can put up a big ALOHA banner, which not only means Hello or a sign of affection, but it also means Farewell. I have a complete Luau Party Plan on my website, as well as all the party supplies you would need for a Luau. You can make it a more traditional Hawaiian party with leis and grass skirts, hula contest, limbo, etc. Or go for a Hawaiian Beach look emphasing the beach, surfing, etc. Please visit my vendor link and my personal website and click on my PARTYSHop for all the products or Party Corner, then More Theme Ideas for my Luau suggestions. I offer free consultations to all my customers, no matter where you live. Good Luck!

Hi, You may wan't to consider a theme to the party. I.e. Beach, cruise ship, Hawaiin lual etc.
Have hola hoop contest, bobbing for apples, water balloons, egg toss etc. Have everyone come in costume or wear clothes for the theme.
Make sure the D.J. Is hip and has " current" music. Most kids her age just want to hear loud music and dance. Make it fun and let them have a good time.
Use party propsto "dial" in the theme.

Luau's are a VERY FUN theme for a party! The guests tend to be able to relax quickly and you can have fun luau games to get everyone mingling and having a good time. A great place for luau ideas including recipes and game suggestions is www.alohafriends.com/luau.html

Hello, Jinny! You didn't say where you are from. You have a very long day planned. I think this is why your daughter is worried-- will her friends come for an outdoor afternoon mixer *and* a dance party at night? The long day can work to your advantage, however; you can have a family-oriented picnic-like gathering during the day and a party aimed at her friends in the evening. Her very best friends might come to the daytime party, especially if they know her relatives, but most of the kids will come in the evening.
What your daugther and her friends want to do most is to talk and laugh and cry together for what could be the last time in a very long time. Oh, and maybe get one last shot and impressing a cute guy! I would actually stay away from major themes and wacky activities. Put your money into a great dj, good food and fun, non-alcoholic drinks. Pass out a lot of those "one-use" cameras and/or have polaroid cameras around. If you have the budget, consider hiring a wandering photographer. Have a book for everyone to sign.

We're Special Affairs - Wedding Coordinators / Evnet Planners. You may have made a decision by now, but in case you haven't, I have a suggestion.
Perhaps you could plan a pool party which could begin in the late afternoon. Guests can come prepared to swim or just socialize. Later in the evening, the music can begin. Since the party is poolside, you would use disposable paper products which will cut down on expenses.
Depending on the number and age of guests, you may want to consider hiring a lifeguard.
Depending on the state you're in, you may want to release fireworks.
Food can range from light fare to heavier food as the day progresses.
You can do a lot poolside with lighting to set the mood. Lights around the fence, under the unbrellas. Pretty citonella candles to ward off bugs as well as light the area. Use floral print fabric for table toppers or sheer guaze to drape from unbrellas.
Most items can be rented. Control the amount of alcohol served since it is summer and poolside.
Stagger the guests arrival time. Have a guest registry and gift table. Build party around any theme and color scheme. Party favors can be airforce related or pool party related...like water purses for men and women and children.
Have fun and let me know if any of these ideas work for you.

I think(coming from a teen) that you should have it were its only friends and not family.I mean you could do a little dinner with the family the next day or something like that. But teens would probably just like it teens that way they dont have to hang out with old people.I think that is a great idea that your going to have a dj so they can have a dance. If your worried about adult supervision I think you should have a couple of people over like in there 20's or so that you know you can trust. If you want a couple of teen games I would recommend suck and blow and that one game were you put the orange in between your neck and try to put it in the other persons neck and it goes in a line.I understand if you dont want those games but thats just coming from a teenager.I think would also be neat is if you had a pool or a neighberhood pool they could go swimming in the heat of the day.Well thats all that I can think of I hope everything works out this will probably be her last at home party.good luck to you and good luck to her in the Air Force.

I think that your min ame is to keep everyone active, keep everyone on their feet, good music will get them goin, especially if its loud :) also u shud put up a marque so that there is some where to sit if they want to, a bit of alcohol wont hurt get thjem pissed ! ! haha.
Well final tip from the masta, make them laugh, do a party trick like fire blowing or something to keep them happy, and get them pissed.

Jinny, Hi I have to agree with the post that there should be no "real theme". Except graduation/birtday (cake); the day is long and I believe family should be there in the afternoon. Slower, older music for afternoon. For dinner with family keep it just that, BUT have a section/table that her "GOOD" friends can join in on family also, I.E. A table reserved JUST for her and her friends. Make a memory lane table. Get enlarments either posters or cut-out of her thru her life. Baby-toddler-pre-teen-teen and now and post all around this table of memories. Hang like it is a dorm room/bedroom with chairs or a area for everyone to get comfy and look thru it all. Leave a blank diary type book out so everyone can write her a short message OR See me about a site that will actually make a book just for her, about her. And everyone can sign it just like a year book....except all about your daughter. Get a photo/scrape album togehter of your daughter from birth all the way till graduation. Lots of pictures, captions, letters...did ya know`s? and school projects and awards. We all have a box of every project and report card and pic from baby-school so put it in a album (or two) and present it to her. As well as leave it out. Her friends will also be in there (book and pic)and they can all laugh on how they have changed and grown up. She will also cherish it. Include a letter to her on how you(and family) are proud of her. I did this for my son last year when he graduated and he and his friends loved going thru everything. Yes, boys are so different then girls and I was affraid all his friends would think it was corny , but he and all of them where soooo impressed I had all of it. I took a 1st day of school and last day of school pic every yr...all the way from kindergraden thru his sn year. All the same guys where always in it. Yes, I had to sneak to get it but on his party ir was so worth it. The boys stood the same way, almost in the same spots 12yrs later....just alot taller and grown. As for the evening "friend" party make it just that. Have another late night dinner...pizza/wings/subs lots of snacks....and stuff for them to do. Try those blow-up party rental places for Summo wrestler, stick to wall, wall climbing ect...anything teens would like. Make the DJ more their music. If they like kari-oki (Spelling), dancing..or get a local group to play and have A CONCERT just for them...every town has up and coming groups. I don`t know where you live but how about a bonfire? and campout so everyone can just stay over (or driving late) and then serve breakfeast the next morning.. Ok, lots of coffee and a tray of bagels/danish and dounuts or cake(you will have left over cake). They guys in the group will eat all the left overs so it will make your life easier. Hope I was able to give you some idea`s.
PS: I knew the scrapbook/photo album was a success because every graduation party I went to the rest of the summer copied it as best AS they could. It was nice to see:) Pattie
