A lot depends on how big your class is. My high school was pretty big (2500) and there must have been over 600 people at our prom. Also, class dues from our large class brought in a great deal of money. There is a beautiful college in our hometown, and we rented out a beautiful building there. Otherwise, many of the decorations were very simple; a canopy of white Christmas lights, centerpieces on the table of btea fish (which looked very beautiful, espcially with a piece of cloth complementing the fish`s color beneath the bowl).
I would definitely suggest finding some beautiful old building in your community to hold your prom; they have character. It was so much better than a blank hall. If you do rent out a community center or soemthing of the sort, you will want to spend a lot of time to make it look really special.
