I see that many of you are interested in becoming a wedding planner. I`ve been in this business since 1993 and can tell you - there`s a lot more to it than meets the eye! I am always happy to chat with people who are seriously considering this field - it`s a great way to own your own business, create the hours you`d like to have and to chart your own financial destiny. If you`d like to see first hand exactly what goes on in the life of a full-time, professional wedding consultant - I invite you to watch my show on Style Network entitled "Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?" which airs Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. Eastern. I am one of the featured consultants in this season`s casts - and really enjoyed showing the public what my job entails and how I create amazingly extraordinary events for my clients.
If you`d like more information about this field or to comment on the show, please feel free to email me at matrimonybiz@aol.com
Thanks for your time - I look forward to hearing from you!!

No, you do not need to attend college in order to become a wedding planner. It is better to have taken at least some college courses (in my opinion) in the Human Relations field, so that you have a better understanding of dealing with people in the business world.
There are some planners that haven`t taken any courses, and then there are some (such as myself) that have taken the courses to become a certified planner. Taking the courses add a little more credibility to the job you are doing. I took my courses through Education Direct (you can find them on the internet), but there are many other accredited institutions that you can take courses from.
After taking courses through Education Direct, you will be a member of the Association of Bridal Consultants as well. There are member fees, but they are waived for a portion of the first year.
Make sure that the course you take is through an accredited school.
Another thing to realize is that being a wedding planner isn`t simply that - planning weddings. It is a business, and like any other business, there are things to plan out - marketing, budgeting, taxes, business licenses, etc. The courses you take should go into this fairly well in depth. It is the least popular part of being a wedding planner, but it is the part that is most important - and doing it right will help you greatly in finding clients.

I"m not even close to college yet but i think when i come around to it i would like to become a wedding planner. I`m a control freak and i don`t know if thats a good thing to be if you`re a wedding plannner or a bad thing. I do know that i`m pretty good at planning things and putting things together that look good i love to organize things at school even though the other people i`m working with get pretty upset because if i don`t like something they did i just tell them that it doesn`t look good or that it won`t work and pretty much just change it! but in the end it always turns out looking great so they all forgive me i always explain why it won`t work or doesn`t look good though! and i always warn them before i start that i`m a control Freak and that they`re goin` to get mad at me but it will work out in the end! i`m kind of just rambling on and on! But i like to get ahead start on things like what college i want to go to way before i need to even be worring about it. So i was just was wondering if any of you guys had any suggestions on good schools for wedding planning!

I am currently in college for early childhood education and i really do not like it as much as i thought i would. I do not have fun anymore, have more headaches than i would like and i need to make more money than i am now. I have always been interested in wedding planning and i am very creative and have great people skills. I looked online to try to find a school and had no luck. I would really like to know if there are any schools in the south jersey area and if so, how long will the program take. I am very interested in the profession and would like to start my own business one day after shadowing an experienced wedding planner. So PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!! ??????????

Hey, so ive been reading that a lot of you want to become wedding planners. Well, I worked at the Continuing Education Department at Cal State University Hayward and they have a certificate program to become a certified wedding planner. I dont know exactly which area you all are from, but it would be a good idea to check the Continuing Education or Extended education department of universities in your area. I know this certificate program was very intense, you learn a lot about dealing with vendors and budgeting and all that. You all should look into it.
