Planning A Family Prepared Reception...need H

I am weighing my options as to what will be most cost efficient for my reception. The average $50 pp, (in Delaware County, PA) seems to be unreasonable! We were thinking of having our family help us to create a reception with homecooked meals. I have a couple of questions about this option, for those who have done this:

(this is for about 80-100 guests)
*who does the set up? If everyone is at the wedding, when is there time to set up the food/tables/decorations?

*Is it *tacky* to ask people to cook, and buy the food themselves...then, specify that they do not need to provide a wedding gift?

*How do I divy up the preparation responsibilities? Will it look bad if I don`t do that much, since I will already have a lot on my plate?

*Is the hassle worth the money that we will save by hiring a caterer?

Thank you for your help!

Take a minute to contact the vendor here on partypop, A Beautiful Celebration. They are sponsoring a dream wedding sweepstakes, with a message on the message board of that name. I used them for my sister, and i am using them for me, too. You can`t go wrong with them & they are the best you can find!

That is what we did. We asked close family and friends on a voluntary basis if they would like to bring food. I was amazed at how many of them were happy to do it. My MIL paid 3 ladies from her work to come in and help set up and serve the buffet style meal. It was not tacky at all. Don`t feel bad, the only thing I did to help with the food was throw together a veggie tray the morning of the wedding.

I`m also having friends and family help with the food for my wedding. One idea I had to deal with the serving issue was to ask a few of my younger sister`s high school friends to be in charge of refilling the buffet and punch stations. I was thinking of either paying them for their time or getting them a nice gift, I know a few of them who would be more than willing to help. This solves my problem of not wanting my close friends and family to have to worry about serving during the reception and to still be able to save money by having them help me prepare the food.
