Renewing Vows In Church

I have a question about renewing vows in a catholic church. My husband and I are celebrating 5 yrs being married. We want to do a small, but elaborate wedding with his family (since we didn`t do that the first time), however, my husband wants to attempt having it done in a church? I am not baptized, I do not have documentation at all to confirm a baptism. I do know that when I was born my parents had presented me to the church and got a blessing, but it was not a catholic church. I am really confused by this because I thought if a couple is married outside the church, ie: JOP, then both couples are never able to take communion or have a wedding inside the church, it is thought that the wedding is not valid to the church. I`m so confused by this, and I really would like to better understand this so I can try and explain this to my husband. Right now, my husband is serving overseas and will not be back until next year, but in time for our 5yr mark, and I would really like to make his wish of having a ceremony in a church possible for him, but I don`t want lack of batism documentation to be an issue. If someone can help, PLEASE! thanks in advance.
