Hi Laura!:)
I have seen a few cute ideas for wedding favors -- I think its kinda cute to give out favors that "go" with the feeling of your wedding. If you get married outside in a field (which can be really cool;) then give out wildflower seeds in lil packets (or container of choice). I saw one where they had these lil open top handmade-paper bags containing seedlings (trees, herbs, or flowers) that were already growing. Attached was a card that gave information about the particular seedling-- such as the 'meaning' or use of it. Then it asked them to please plant it in honor of the couple. :)
Of course there are many ideas that are more formal.... I think it depends on the type of wedding you are having.
Will try to remember some others I have seen!:)
Good luck though....

Do you have a theme? For example, one of my BM's recently married and her husband was Japanese... At her shower we had little paper geisha's and our nametags were oriental fan designs... It was so cute! They didn't really give keepsake favors... And I honestly don't think they were missed. They gave fabulous prizes for those who won games.
If you don't really havea theme to work with (if you're just using the fact that it's a bridal or baby shower) one cute idea would be, wedding bells or basinettes (pardon my spelling) for nametags. For favors, you could give mini wedding cakes (see this done, it's fabulous!) or maybe small bottles of wine with a baby bottle nipple on the top (blush if it's a girl... Very funny).
If it's a huge shower then those ideas wouldn't work as well... Well, they would, but it would be costly. You could do the personalized candybars for larger groups (edible favors always go over well) or little decorated votives... One really simple way to decorate votive candles is to go into the crafting section and get the tiny pins and sequins and just pin the sequins onto the candles, they look expensive, but are really cost effective and unique! Wrap the decorated candle, and maybe a holder, in either white cotton closed with a diaper pin or tulle and a ribbon. Another option would be cookie cutters, bells or hearts for wedding, bunnies or butterflies, or airplanes or duckies, tied to a colorful ribbon. What about boxes filled with jellybelly's or m&m's? You could make the boxes look like alpha-blocks or wedding presents. Also, porcelain trinket boxes can be a great favor idea!
If I can think of anything else, I'll be sure to let you know... Hope this helped!

Imprinted matchbooks are a way to go. They are about
21c each at the American Wedding Album website.
I don't have anything in my brain for baby showers.
Sorry.
Good Luck,
Princess
