DeproVera

I am 19 and was on the DeproVera injection for about 2 years. I had no period with it which was just wonderful. However I have been off of the injection for about 9 months and I have my period twice every month when before I started the injections I only had it for about 2-5 days per month. Also my husband and I have been trying to conceive for the past 8 months and have been unsuccessful.

But good luck on it

Thanks for wishing us luck. I have recently talked to my doctor about the situation and he gave me a new oral contraceptive called Cyclessa. He said it would help get my cycle back in order and said that we should be able to conceive when I finish my three month program.

I was looking different things up about it, because i was trying to figure some stuff out that had to do with it (like how would you know if you were pregnet and things with no peirod, and can you have just no period at all and things...) and i found a thing that said it could take up to a year...so i think thats all it is...its just still working...but i am sure it will stop working soon, and stop causeing you problems..

Rochelle,
You are the 1st person on here that has been on the shot as long as I have. How long did it take for you to get your 1st period after your last shot? My last shot was in March, so the med. Was supposed to be out of my system by June. Here it is almost September and I have yet to show any signs of a returning period!

Well,I`ve only had one shot in April. I am breastfeeding my 9 month old and that was all they had to offer me. I had a period in the beginning of june, which lasted 3 weeks. I haven`t seen one since. I know you usually don`t get one while breastfeeding, but everyon`es different. I`m always miserable to everyone. I have signs of depression. And I have absolutely NO sex drive. My husband thinks I hate him. I was supposed to go back in July to get my second shot, but with all that was going on I didn`t. And I probably won`t ever get a second shot. I want my life back.

How long was it before things returned to normal?

I received my last injection in July of 2003, and was still without a period until April of 2004. I was worried so I went and talked to my doctor. My doctor told me that it was normal because the injection could stay in my system for a year or possibly more. He told me I had three options. (1) I could get back on the shot, which was not an option, (2) I could take a cycle of the pill to start my period, or (3) I could just wait it out. I decided to wait it out and luckily I started the next month in April. So it was about 9 months after my last injection. Once I started my period again, I would have my period twice a month with horrible cramps. I went back to my doctor and told him what was happening and he gave me Cyclessa. Cyclessa has worked wonders for my period. I now only have it once each month, and it lasts about 3-4 days, no cramping and it is at the same time each month. However, I still have horrible mood swings, and I have had them ever since I began taking the injections. I thought whenever I got off I would go back to "normal" I was wrong. So to be honest I have no clue when things will get back to normal, I have been off of the injection for over a year now and I am still suffering from horrible mood swings.

I went on the shot (DeproVera) as I had a hard time remembering to take my pills. I thought this would be a wonderful alternative and plus NO PERIODS! Wrong. I broke out like crazy and had absolutely no sex drive what so ever. I never went back to get another one. The week I was to get my second shot I started spotting and then a couple weeks later got my period. My period hasn`t stopped since. I`ve had my period for about 1 1/2 months!

I went on the shot right after i had my son. I was on it for about 2 years. During those 2 years I had a constant period. If it did go away it would only be for a day, then it would be back. I had it for two 1/2 months straight before it would give me a one day break. Talk about expensive!! I went off it when I met my husband, but I was always afraid to get off it before because I didn`t want to get pregnant again.

See everyone on here had absoloutly nothing good to say about the shot, but i personally am a depo - lover! I have Endemetriosis and i was diagnosed at 13 (3 yrs after getting my period) I`m now still a baby at only 17 but before i was introduced to this shot i spent 5 - 10 days a month in bed with 1 heating pad on my stomach and another on my back... I spent time in hospitals all the time for pain relief. My family and i tried everything, i did oral B.C. For 2 and a half years with every pain relieving medication possible ... You name it and the 3 gynos i went to tried it, they even tried sending me to GI specialist, nothing was working and i was MISERABLE... My best friend erin had gotten pregnant on mistake and after an abortion her mother made her start the depo shot, she explained it to me, and i suggested it to my doctor who was EXTREMELY hesitant... She didnt like the idea of the depo shot AT ALL... But me being the patient i did get what i wanted and she let me try it... I started it when i was about 15 and a half and for a 2years ive been almost completely pain free... Now i get cramps like a normal person would around the time when my period should come... And as for all the depression stuff, yes i am now clinically depressed as of 2 months ago, but the depo isnt the problem, i witnessed my grandfather passing away and then within days i was diagnossed as a "victim of post traumatic stress disorder causing depression" so yeah i still get cramps, and im on meds for depression but my life is SOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER since i started taking the shot 2yrs ago... I think this is the best thing in the world~and i would recomend it to anyone in my shoes!

Hey Everyone. I also took the "SHOT" as everyone calls it. I like it to at first, but then as it came tiime for my next shot i was a little cautious about it. Yet i still did it anyways. I was only on it for a really short time because i didnt feel right when i was taking it. It made me feel weak and sickly all the time. And thats so not me. I started my shot the middle of 2006 and by dec 2006 i took my last shot, Now it is september 2007 and i just now am having a period. So it took a little while for it to stop working for me. But who is to say that it is completely done. I started the shot because i had alot of female problems. My best advise to anyone if you dont thinks it right, then dont do it. I hope i helped. So just hang in there and hopefully everything will go back to normal. Best wishes.

I was on depo for a yr and a half and i thought it was great. I even lost weight while taking it. However now that im off of it i realise how much if affected me. I have been off of it for 4 months and i thought id be back to normal but im far from it. Im breaking out and im moody and just dnt feel like doing anything. Im always tired. I was never told any of these side effects when i went to plan parenthood i was only told that i may gain weight. Im looking for suggestions as to what i should do? i also want ppl to check into this before they take it.

I have to admit the not having a period thing freaks me out. I mean then you just have a bunch of old "expired" eggs building up in your body, and that can`t be good. I assume we need to get of our eggs every month for a reason. I`m sorry all you all are having so many problems with "the shot." But thanx for the horror stories...think I`ll stick to my mild, once a month, 5 day long, little to no cramping period.

I was on the injection for ~3yrs and though it was the best thing ever while I was on it. No periods, not mood swings, great. I have now stopped taking it for a year now. It took 6 months before I got a period and I still do not have a regular cycle - let alone know if iam ovulating. I would NOT recommend taking this form of contraceptive if you are planning on having a family at any point in the future. If you have had your kids and not want to have any more - then it would be great. I am so frustrated - every month - trying to get pregnant

I`ve been reading the messages about "the shot". I just came from the GYN last night - annual appt. I`ve been given 2 options and am interested in some feedback. Option 1 - hysterectomy (4-6 weeks recoup) or option 2 "the shot". I am 43 y/o and done having kids. I`ve had uterine ablation and now am in perimenopause. The shot appeals to me because its much less invasive.

Christy,.

Wow! I don`t think it`s the depo that is keeping you from conceiving. I know three women that I`ve talked to who have gotten pregnant on the depo shot. In my opinion it`s one of the least effective hormonal birth control methods. My opinion is only based on the three friends who have gotten pregnant while on the injection.

I would stay off the science while trying to get pregnant. Just relax. You are young and it may just take some time. Good Luck.

I`ve had the shot 3 times already so thats about 8 months and the first time i got the shot my period minimalized and I became very snappy. The second time i got it my period started dissipating and i would only spot, but then i would stop bleeding completely and when my boyfriend and i would have sex it would make me start bleeding again. It was so embarrassing i was bleeding for like 3 weeks at a time. And then the third round i just became completely depressed. I cry at just the sight of people on tv kissing or anything. Things i would ordinarilly never cry over. My period lasts for weeks at a time. I broke up with my boyfriend, i never wanted to have sex and when we did i really wasn`t feelin it. I have an appt in a couple weeks with the gyno to go back on the pill becuase i can`t take this. I never know when i am going to bleed, the second i stop it starts right back up again. I am too embarrassed to have any relations with any guys because i don`t know if imay start to bleed during intercourse. This method of birth control is horrible. I started getting really bad headaches on a daily basis and it was just absolutely horrible. I can`t wait to officially be off it. I hope it doesn`t affect me on a long term basis.

I took my last depo shot in Jan. Of 2007 and it is now Aug. 2008 and I haven`t had a period yet. My OBGYN put me on meds. To try and kick start it (I too am trying to get pregnant)..still no luck. If anyone else has gone this long and has had a happy ending ..I would love to hear about it. The Depo is great if you are done w/having children but it seems to have screwed me up!
