Wedding Dress Alteration

I just had my 1st fitting... My dress needs to be altered (of course). I was so shocked when they (bridal salon) told me that it would cost $450. My dress was $1600 (Marisa STYLE: 564/ size 6 -)- This just seems crazy. I was budgeting about $200 for alterations. Has anyone had experience with going to a professional tailor or? instead of the bridal boutique alteration? I will ask my friends for referrals... I am just in shock. Thank you for your help!!

I am shock as well. My wife and I just came back from the alteration factory and find out it will cost us $350.00 plus the cost of dry cleaning/pressing. I think this is a bit expensive as well. However, I am told this is cheap, because they have to cut the dress, restitch each pleat, and match up all the beads, etc. They said most places charges more. Geezz when I am down with alterations, dry cleaning, etc it will cost as much as the dress.

Unless you are having some extensive alterations those prices seem WAY out of line. I had a hem, bustle, and cups added to my dress for a $125 at the pricey salon where I purchased the dress.
Perhaps your dresses have intricate beading around the hem line, but still this seems a little overboard. My dress had beading all along train and it wasn`t that expensive. I know prices are different in different areas...but I would look into other options.
I would definitly get some quotes from a seamstress, alterationist, or tailor...this way you`ll know if it`s the dress that`s outrageous or the bridal shop.
Oh, cleanings and steamings usually run $75-$150 depending on the length of the train.

I agree those prices are a big high. I`d even suggest to research a good tailor or seamstress in your area. I know many bridal shops charge a lot to get a bustle done, and i had my bustle for my wedding done by a local seamstress who charge me $50 for a bustle instead of the $200 fee and she also pressed my dress for the wedding. So really search more options.
Best of Luck

$503 to alter my dress (including tax & pressing) ....such a rip off but i have no other options since my dress is being held hostage at the bridal store :(
