Curly Hair Dilema

I have natural curly hair - which can sometimes be more of a hindrance than a blessing. On a good day - I could have nice, smooth, bouncy, curly hair. On a bad day - it can look lank, fizzy and bushy. Not exactly the look I want to achieve for my wedding day.

For those sharing my dilema, you will know only too well the work that goes into maintaining it. I`ve tried using Fizz-Ease and a number of conditoning treatments which have all proved rather expensive and a waste of money, I`ve heard that alcohol-based products should be avoided, but I am lost to which products have been proved successful.

Any recommendations, tips or idea`s to combat my problem would be helpful.

Are you wanting to wear your hair up or down?

Undecided. Everyone say`s my hair suits me better when down - but I guess that depends if it`s a good day. Up looks kinda fuss free and most bridal pictures I`ve seen tend to have an up-do. As long as I can guarantee a `fizz-free` look I`ll be happy...

If you post your e-mail address then I wil try to send you a picture of my sisters hair. It is long and very frizzy curly. The hairdresser made it beautiful. It held all day.

I had the very same proplem as you are right now. Let me tell you how I had my hair done and hopefully it will help you. First off MY hair is very curly, I only use moose on it (Vital Care) and even then I have my share of bad hair days. The trick to making curly hair look like the updo`s that all of the people with straight hair get is leaving the product (moose) in your hair and using a curling iron. I know, why re-curl your hair when it is already curly, well as you know with natural curls they can some times be very unpredictable so if you want to play it safe do this and your curls will last all day with the help of a gallon of hair spray. I had my hair half up half down for my wedding and it was so beautiful I was encouraged not to where a veil so I didn`t. I strongly suggest you play around with it first or go to a hair dresser way before your wedding so you know what you want for you day. I hope this helps, best of luck to you on your special day!

Problem with hairdressers is that I have yet to come across one who knows how to style my hair. Cutting it is not too much of a problem, but the minute I walk out the salon - I guarantee I will be racing home to re-do it. I`ve had my hair straightened a few times - can`t get used to it - though it`s great to be able to run my fingers through my hair.

Weather plays a big part on how my hair settles - the slightest drop of rain can cause it to `puff` up even if the weather is great - humidity can have the same effect!

Ummm. Maybe I should contemplate wearing a wig...

Boy, you described my hair to a "T". (what does this mean anyway?!)

You should wear your hair however you feel most comfortable. You don`t want a hairstyle is isn`t "you".

The secret to accepting, maybe even liking, curly hair is learning to manage the curls. Curly hair is starved for moisture.

When I shampoo, I use Dove shampoo labeled "Intense Moisture" (blue cap on bottle) or Pantene "Hydrating Curls" shampoo (white bottle with pinkish logo). However, I rarely shampoo - see below.

Although I rarely shampoo my hair, I condition it EVERY DAY with a product like Pantene "Smooth & Sleek" Complete Therapy Conditioner (white bottle with green logo). What some people don`t realize is that using a conditioner removes alot of the gunk you put in your hair without drying it.

After conditioning, I sometimes comb through Pantene`s proVtreatment called "Restore and Renew" (white tube). It`s a deep fortifying treatment that makes hair smoother. This I leave on for a few minutes, then rinse out. Or, sometimes I don`t rinse it all out, just rinse out most of it. This you just have to figure out.

Then I put on a product like Loreal "Nature`s Therapy" Perfect Curls (orange tube, purchased at Sally`s) OR a product like "Noodle Head" from Beyond the Zone (another orange tube also from Sally`s). These products are both a white cream. Use one or the other to moisturize the curls. Sometimes I even add a little coconut oil (from Mustard Seed). It comes in a jar and looks like white congealed bacon fat which liquifies when you rub it into your hand. You don`t need much and I put this on the ends and also the back and sides to control frizz.

If you are going to wear your hair curly, the best thing I`ve found is to let it air-dry. As soon as I use a hairdryer, my hair frizzes.

Another alternative is to use an electric hairsetter. I`ve found the ones with the white plastic rollers smooth my hair much more than the velvety-flocked rollers. If you use the largest rollers (I had to buy two sets to get enough of the large rollers), take them out before they cool, then let the hair cool before you comb it through, you might get more control of your hair of your hair this way.

My favorite hairspray is Pantene`s Flexible Hold. It doesn`t get sticky.

Two other products I like are "Frizz Ease - Secret Weapon" by John Frieda. It`s a cream you can put on dry to smooth the frizzies. Also, Loreal`s "Perfect Curls Defining Spray Get" produces tight curls that look great but make the curls a little stiff. They do last a long time though.

If you decide to wear your hair down, just add a clip or two to add a little more control and to direct the style. Another tip which I`m sure you know, if you`re going to wear your curls, don`t brush your hair! Use a comb lightly or a hair pick. When I want to freshen the curls, I get my hands wet and simply pat the surface of my hair all over. In minutes my curls are really tight.

Good luck.

This may sound silly but a about eight months ago I had my hair permed an dit is very naturally curly but the perm gave me control. In fact it made it slightly less curly than it had been in the past. I use faithfully Frizz-ease perfect curls. I do not comb or brush my hair after it is dry and I scrunch the excess water out of it with paper towels instead of regular ones.
Hope any of this helps

I have the same problems with my hair...biolage curl defining creme works wonders! Good bye bad hair days! Are you wearing your hair down or up? I notice that (even if it takes a little longer to do) if i spin each section in about 1/2 inch rings, holding each for a moment it works like a curling iron without all the damage a curling iron makes. This also has a smooth frizz-free look and feel! I hope I helped you a little...a little tip is try this before the actual wedding day!

You just decribe my problem also. I live in a humid area so I am contantly at battle. I did find some relief in a product. I believe it is called Curl Up. It comes and a bright green bottle, a little pricy but you don`t need to use a lot. My curl`s are more defind with this product. I heard people use that VO5 hot oil, I have yet to experiment that far.

Bonus to curly hair though you can pull it up in an updo without worrying about the curl falling out. I pin my hair up myself and it looks like I spent money at a salon. Also you don`t have all the harsh products that they use in the salon on your hair.

I reccomend a product by ISO called disciplining. I buy it at Ulta. It is a gel and gloss in one. I have tried everything and this works by far the best.

Thanks guys for all your tips,

Wedding is nearing and I went for some trial hairdo`s yesterday at Toni & Guys. They showed me how to achieve the `frizz-free` look by basically coating sections of hair with styling product and twisting into ringlets, the ringlets were then dried with a diffuser, shine gloss added to ringlets then finally seperated carefully. It was great, though I felt a little like Shirley Temple...

Another tip they gave was not to do it on freshly washed hair - the older it is the longer the curl will hold!!

One secret i have come to learn- DO NOT TOUCH YOUR HAIR WHEN IT IS WET. Seriously, when it is air drying, dont touch at all, even just to sweep it out from your face. If you MUST touch it, make sure to have product on your hands, like pomade or gloss. Does anyone else get so enraged how on every makeover show if someone has curly hair they straighten it and THEN they`re beautiful?! so most importantly ladies, learn to love your curls. We have been given a gift. How many people on a daily basis comment on how gorgeous your hair is and how they pay so much money to get it even close to yours? i get it all the time. Dont be ashamed of the curl, embrace it!

I think that`s funny that on makeover shows they always straighten the curly girls hair, yet girls with straight hair always want curls.
I guess it`s just wanting what you can`t have.

Hi. I know exactly what you are going through. I think i`ve tried pretty much every curly hair product out there. One thing i have found is that products formulated especially for curly hair, really dont work. The gel that i have stuck with the longest is paul mitchel. Here`s my routine; wash and condition with dove weightless moisturizer rinse, bla bla. While still in the shower i ring my hair out a bit and then put a dime size amount of herbal essence conditioner through my hair especially on the ends and i dont rinse it out. Then as soon as i step out of the shower (note-no towel drying) i apply paul mitchell super sculpt gel, flip, scrunch, done. Then, DO NOT TOUCH until completely dry. If it gets a little frizzy later or needs a little pickup, i use paul mitchell super skinny serum or rusk wired. Hope this helps you, works for me, i love my curls more than ever before!

I want to try frizz ease. Ia have straight hair but in some places it`s really wavy. The hair in front is not frizzy, but the hair in back is and my hair is really puffy in the back but normal in the front. Do you think frizz ease will work? I don`t wanna straight iron my hair because I think it`ll ruin my hair, ger it burnt. PLEASE HELP!

Hey al thegirls out their with curls, i know how it feels on a real bad day. For several years i`ve been up and down the highstreets looking for a product which will give me frizz-free, individual, wrapped gorgeous curls. My hair is naturally curly, but like everyone elses it is quite fizzy. Ive wasted money on frizz ease curl sprays, gels, revivers and so on. THE ONLY FRIZZ-EASE PRODUCT WHICH I FOUND USEFUL WAS THE SERUM. THE NEW PRODUCT WHICH I FOUND, AND NOW ABSOLUTELY LOVE is.............................................
Trevor Sorbie`s professional to go curl cream. It gives amazing shiny results and in only £1.50 from boots. Apply it on damp hair and scrunch for more bounce. Once DRY, get very small amounts of frizz-ease serum onto your fingertips, and twirl around your curls. It gives nice shiny, individually wrapped curls.
After i used this curl cream my curls looked and felt much better, and was envied for having natural curls. By using this product you are not making fake curls but simply reviving natural ones. So use this product, speak loud and speak proud to have CURLEY HAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (anyway staright hair is quite boring, dont you think?)

Your hair sounds identical to mine, it can be such a pain sometimes, and i have a school prom in a month and i can`t think of how to wear my hair. But a good product is Matrix biolage gel, or paul mitchellmouse which both define and reduces frizz. Hope it`s a help!

Ahhh girls, girls, girls WOW how great it is to know lots of us love our curls but have trouble styling, I AM NOT ALONE!!!

Well reading all ur tips it sounds to me that different products work on our hair depending on type/colour & texture. I have naturally red, naturally curly locks which is the coarsest of all -aghhh. You just gotta try everything until something works for you. I wash my hair using a moisturising/nourishing shampoo (any brand), it`s the conditioner that`s important. Curl Friends (pink) bottle, or million dollar locks (yellow)bottle, by Umberto gianni works for me, smells great but does actually soften n shine my hair but not too much. Use ur judgement always with product amount, try until u get balance right. Then I apply a small amount of Beverly Cobella curl calmer, followed by Clynol Moussette, for a stronger hold, or Beverly Cobella curl calmer, followed by Kerastase Elasto-curl for a softer natural look. Phew we have to take our time with our locks but I really only spend say 10 mins on it. Comb both products through together so u don`t disrupt curl twice/or rake hands through, then leave to air dry. Avoid touching!! The only time I touch my hair is when I`ve whacked product on I finger twist from roots to ends the hair around the crown area & fringe, so basically just the top layer of hair randomly cos I find this makes the appearance look a smoother tighter curl all over!

Wow, written a blimmin essay... If ur not bored to death and actually got to the end of this I hope my advice works for some lucky curly haired lady out there. X

Girl i know where you are coming from...I have naturally BLACK-NAPPY hair that goes everywhere whenever it feels the urge. You have to use a deep hydrating shampoo. Then go to your nearest salon and buy FLAT OUT. And to the drug store and buy Physique Precision Wax (for chunking and piecing). Saturate your hair with the Flat Out aand blow dry ON LOW COOL. Then take a little bit of wax and starting from the front blend into you hair (especially the frizziest parts, but not too much Wax otherwise your hair will look greasy) then take a really hot curling iron, seperate your hair into sections and straighten. Your hair WILL COME OUT LOOKING STAIGHT AND SMOOTH, its done wonders with my hair (FLAT OUT) its only about $14.00 at MasterCuts

Well, I have learned to love my curly hair once I found the perfect product to make the curls shiny and soft and managable. There are 2 now but one i`ve been using for 16 years. Grahm Webb Intensives silk protein leave in conditioner. When you get out of the shower LIGHTLY towel dry your hair and apply. The other is REDKIN Fresh curls. Both are wonderful. Also, I have learned that if you comb through your hair IN the shower...I usually comb out my conditioner under the water, this will keep your curls very healthy and individually shiny. Good luck! You WILL be surprised with the difference.. I mean Grace curls...from Will and Grace..no problem! =)

My hair is exactly the same way, and it took me awhile to find a product that tamed it. Now I live by it! It`s called Biosilk Silk Therapy. It`s about $20 for a 12oz. Bottle, but you use very little at a time. They even make shampoo and conditioner as well as gel and hairspray. You can get it anywhere. Walgreens, A&P, etc. If you really have trouble finding it, Macy`s carries it.

I have what you would call straight frizzy hair meaning, from the top of my head its flat then from the ears towards my shoulders it goes uncontrolable and frizzy like baby hair its thin and whispy. If i let it dry naturally with a bit of gel or moouse the hair turns into flat heavy curls that makes my face look long a bit like alanis moressette and the top of my head still looks flat, for a while ive been blow drying it whlist damp with shock waves moouse whlist turning my head upside down and scrunching the curls with my hands to give it volume at the top problem with this is although its so far the best method for me it makes my hair feel hard and looks a little unnatural i`d love to find a method that makes my hair look more natural and touchable without having a flat head or useing too much moouse, my kind of hair needs the volume the hair dryer provides but need something for top part of head coz aswell as being flat i get bits of frizzy baby hair on top too. I do look after my hair tho, i use natural shampoo and conditioner and i wash my hair evry 3 days otherwise its even more dry and i only brush it whilst wet or in the shower, i use an afro comb to seperate the curls. Any tis or advise would be great, id love to have hair like shakira`s if any one knows how to get that style. Luv katia

I LOVE Sebastian Texturizer. It`s a soft gel, and it`s not sticky, but provides control, and shape, but not too much hold. LOVE it. Haven`t found anything better.

I have been told to wear my hair half up and half down. My hair is naturally curly, but if I pull the sides up the curls usually look sleek because the frizzy part is up and curled with a curling iron. Hope this helps!

I too have curly hair, and have battled the frizz all my life, until just recently when I discovered the following, in order to avoid frizziness, instead of wrapping your hair in a towel after a shower, use a t-shirt, keep most of the water in do not squeeze out the water (just run your hand down you hair gently to remove a bit of the water). Apply your favorite styling product (I use a product called Re-Coil from AG).and lay the t-shirt on a flat surface and bring your head to the t-shirt. Wrap up the t-shirt by match up both ends, and twisting the sides, when your ready to blow dry your hair, do not comb out your hair (even after you come out of the shower), use a diffuser and always aim downwards, if you follow these steps, I guarantee you, you will have the curls you`ve always dreamed of. Let me know how it goes
