Baby Shower Etiquite

I, along with my mother in law am planning my baby shower. Is it ok to send invitations to family who live out of town whom you know will not come to the baby shower? Also is it ok to put a card in the invitations that in leu of registering we would like gift cards to Target, Babies R Us or Toys R Us?
