Is it tradition or proper etiquette for the godmother to buy the godchilds christening gown?

I am the godmother of 2 children and have never had to or been asked to buy the christening gown. I have bought the child a special gift that they could always keep as a rememberance. I think that makes it a bit more special..

My Godchild wore a family heirloom(gown has been wore by like 19 different babies in the family starting with the babies Grandmother)so was not an issue for me, but I have not ever heard that. You certainly could buy it if you desire, or something else. I gave my Godaughter a Savings Bond and have continue to do the same for every occasion with a small toy or something else. I`m thinking when she goes off to college, or planning her wedding she can cash in those bonds and remember me!

Jane,
Who made you the Partypop Police? I agree it is off the subject matter, but you didn`t have to open it and read it, either now did you. Some people just love to start trouble! She was asking a simple question leave her alone.
