FONDANT WEDDING CAKES

I have fallen in love with a certain fondant wedding cake, but apparently I have heard that fondant cakes don`t taste as good. Is this true? I don`t want to sacrifice the taste for the look...seeing as how I LOVE eating cake, especially cakes with good frosting!

They are very good! There is usually a layer of buttercream icing under the fondant. Fondant is basically a sugar layer. So, in my opinion, there is no sacrificing of taste!!

Michele, fondant is simply a pliable sugar layer that is layed on the cake, rather than spread. It virtually has the same properties as clay, thus making for an easy medium to work with for decorating. Most of the elaborate cakes with fine detail use this type of icing. I have tasted this type of cake at a wedding, and I also love to watch the food network when they show wedding cake making, competing, etc.....I didn`t know what it was either until I watched how they made it on the food network!!

Your actually not supposed to eat the fondant, there should be buttercream or marzipan underneath. Some people like the taste though....

Fondant is extremely sweet to the point of almost bitter. Fondant also does not have a very nice mouth feel. Typically the fondant is taken off prior to serving and the cake decorators will either have some decorations to add back to the cake or the fondant cake is a dummy strictly for show and there are sheet cakes in the kitchen for serving to the guests.
