Blotchy Neck

I do Bikram yoga and I get VERY red during this class...for those of you who are not familiar with, it`s yoga in 41 C...VERY hot..I get red more than blothcy but yet when first in the sun come spring and summer...blotchiness occurs...different types of heat, does not quite make sense...also, one glass of ANY alcholic beverage brings on the flush. So although I think in part this is adrenal associated I am not certain it is 100%...I have to say in certain situations I am more bothered by this "condition" than others...I am surprised that there is not more infomration on it as it is obvious that a large number of people experience it!! and are very bothered!!!

Hi Nancy,

I have good news for you. I have the same problem when I speak in public, get nervous, or drink wine. I asked my doctor about it because my wedding dress is a halter style & I don`t want to have that problem while walking down the aisle & she told me that the red/blotchyness is a reaction of histamines being released into the skin & to try taking an antihistamine (claritin or reactine or whatever) before-hand & amazingly it works like a charm! I wouldn`t recommend drinking a large amount after taking an antihistamine but it definately does the trick. Let me know if it works for you. Good luck!

Ocean,

I`ve been reading all the messages on red blotchy neck and have seen the responses indicating that Atenolol or Inderal might work. I"m happy to see that an over the counter drug worked for you.
Which antihistamine did you use ? Claritin or Reatin? If it was Claritin, did you use the new one that is for hives/itching? How much do you take and how long in advance do you take before the nervous causing event?

Thanks in advance for your response. I am hoping it will work for me too. I have suffered from this my WHOLE life and it is awful. My wedding is in October and my dress is halter style and I just know I will be nervous and my neck will break out.

I took one Reactine about 1 1/2 hours before the event. When you take medication it usually takes about an hour and a half to reach it`s peak level. I`m pretty sure it was just a regular Reactine that I took. You might want to try taking one before October though, to make sure that it will work for you. Everyone reacts differently to medication but hopefully it will work for you too. Good luck! :)

Thanks for your quick response. I will look for Reactine in my drug store and give it a go before my wedding. I can try it at work for a staff meeting or something. Question - how long long does it last? My wedding is at 5pm. So if I take the pill at 3:30 , will it last till end of reception at 10:30 pm?

Thanks again,
Tammy

Hi Tammy,

I`m not exactly sure how long it will last. It may be different for you than it is for me. It should last at least a few hours but you may need to take another one depending on how late your reception goes. Make sure you read the package first though as I`m not sure how well Reactine will mix with a few glasses of wine. :) I did have a couple of glasses of wine after taking one & I was fine but everyone is different. Let me know if it works for you.

I don`t find Reactine in my drugstore but I do find Claritin. Does Reactine require a prescription? I do have dtr appt in couple weeks to talk with my dtr about this. Another question that came up for me is how many mg did you take.

Thanks alot for your replies, your information is really helping me !

I am so glad to know I`m not alone! I have had the nervous blotchiness thing since I was about 18 or so. It happens when I drink, when I`m out, or even when I`m just hanging out with my friends or family. I`m not at all shy or insecure, so it just really sucks when people point it out. I always try to just brush it off cause it`s embarrassing and I don`t know what to say about it. I wish there was more information about this issue. My doctor didn`t seem to have any idea how to prevent it, or even what it is. Anyhow, I will try the Claratin. I`ve also read that people are using Inderal, Atenolol, or 5-HTP. Do you think a doctor would prescribe meds like those for this condition? Have you guys tried them? Thanks!

I have tried 5-HTP and it`s helpful in relieving anxiety, hence for me, relieving blotchy neck...it is my preference becuase it is natural and you can get it at a health food store...I wouldn`t say that it completely irradicates the condition but it is helpful...
