Wedding Ring Issues

Im having a strange problem... We`re having my rings custom made and I want to use the rubies off of a ring my grandmother gave me. There would be the traditional diamond in the centre with a ruby on either side and 3 set in the wedding band. Problem is that both our families are having fits about using coloured stones in my ring. Am I doing something very wrong, or are they just overreacting because I`m being untraditional????

You aren`t doing anything wrong! If you want to use the rubies off of your grandmother`s ring, then do so. It`s your ring. As for myself, my engagement ring is only a ruby b/c I don`t like diamonds. When we went to go have the ring made, the jeweler said that he uses colored stones in a lot of engagement/wedding rings, so it is not uncommon.

I think that it would be beautiful to have rubies set next to a diamond in a wedding ring. I think the type of wedding ring you choose is part of your personality, and I am sure your grandmother would be honored to have her stones placed in such a personal ring!!! As for your families, tell them it is not their ring, and they don`t have to wear it. Colored stones are really hot right now! I say GO FOR IT!!!!
