Appropriate Number Of Cake Tiers

What would be an appropriate number of tiers for a guest list that consists of 300? Of course I do not expect 300, but I still have no idea on how to speculate. I attended a wedding last year in which there was a five tiered cake for 300, and the bride`s family ended up with half the cake!! Any suggestions or past experiences are appreciated. Thanks ladies:)

We`re not having a huge multi-tiered cake for everyone. I`ve been to many weddings where I`ve seen a lot of the cake is wasted and left untouched on tables. We`re getting a large heart-shaped cake (enough for about 50 people) basically for display. We are inviting about 250 people to the wedding the rest will be getting sheet cakes that the caterer will cut and serve, it`s less expensive and our guests won`t be able to tell! it`s such a waste to get large amounts of cake and have so much of it left!

We are only doing a small cake and a dessert table. Most of our guest are family and none of us really eat cake so we are going to have different types of cookies, cheesecakes and stuff like that. I am also having a chocolate fountain and will have fruit, marshmellows and pretzels to dip!

Ask your baker or just call a bakery.
I`m having a three tier cake, 12"x9"x6" it will feed 90 people.

Here are some suggestions to save $$ on the cake:
Want a huge cake but don`t want to spend big bucks? Try a fake cake, have several or all tiers fake and top tiers or even just two slices real cake. Then either skip cake for guests or have sheet cakes for guests.
Have a small elaborate cake for cutting and looks, then serve the guests off of a sheet cake.

Beth, the bakery will be able to give you a formula for slices cut out of each layer. Layers can be all different sizes...some may have a 3 layer cake with 12". 10" and 6" while another might have a 16", 12", 8"....the sizes of the tiers will determine the # of slices that can be cut. If a caterer is cutting the cake they will be able to get a LOT more pieces out of it than if a "lay" person is undertaking the task :0) There is a certain way to cut wedding cakes to afford the most pieces.
