Seating Arrangements

What is the proper way to seat divorced parents in the church for the ceremony and how do you recommend they stand in the reception line?

I do know that the divorced parents sit at least two rows apart during the ceremony. That`s all I know.

The mother and if applicable her new husband/significant other sit in the first row.
The father and if applicable his new wife/significant other sit in the second row directly behind his former wife.
I had to do research for my own wedding and found that this is the norm.
