Formal Wedding

Does a formal wedding require men rent tuxedos, or is a dark suit appropriate attire? The wedding reception is to be more like a cocktail party. We will be traveling from out of state, about 600 miles, and if you rent a tuxedo locally before you leave, that has to be returned in one business day usually. We don`t know if we will be flying or driving to the wedding destination.

If the wedding invitation states "Black Tie Affair" then yes a tuxedo would be appropriate. However, if it`s simply a formal, non black tie event, then a suit would be quite appropriate.
