Halloween Party

My Family will be throwing a Halloween party this year. Since it's only a month away I'm starting to prepare for that day. It will be a large family event but I want to make sure that I theme it just right. Considering that there may be children present, I don't want to scare them. I'm also new to this holiday, being a foreigner, so what would be right for this situation?
