Smashing!
We`re having a do in 2 months time and, as something unusual, we`re considering having a smashing time. We`re thinking of setting an area apart with lots of cheap/unwanted china and stuff and, at midnight, letting the guests come and smash what they want! I`ve heard of it being done before and have wanted to do it for a while, but I`m unsure how to go about it - eg. Would I be able to get stuff sufficiently cheaply?/ Would I be able to get enough unwanted stuff from myself/ other people?/ What about the safety/legal aspects? Has anyone else heard of this kind of thing happening? and has anyone got any thoughts/ideas? Bye. Chris. (prochaxy2@hotmail.com)

Okay, maybe I`m thinking of a Jewish tradition, but who breaks a glass at the wedding? I think it is Jewish, but if you`ll notice, it`s one glass...not a bunch. And they wrap it up in a cloth napkin.
I`ve seen the Greek`s break dishes (plates) in the movies. Please don`t ask me which one...but I have seen it. There is a tradition behind it. I`ll try to find out what it means.

Okay...here goes. There is an old Greek tradition to break plates, but now it is illegal in travernas (greek?) or nightclubs. Why you ask???? Because of the injuries from the flying glass. Also, now they just bring in trays of flowers, and people have "throwing fits", whereby they throw flowers at the musicians or eachother.
Sounds like a weird thing to do. I don`t see what it accomplishes except making a big mess and most likely not setting well with the restaurant.
If you absolutely have to plan this event, again, don`t forget the goggles, and like I said before, bring your dust pan to pick up the pieces, and take a mosaic class, then sell your wares and donate your $$ to charity..how `bout that!

I have seen things in movies like this, however, its important to remember that what we see in the movies, and what "works well" in reality, can often be two different things. In movie sets, they have stuntmen and stuntwomen, professionals, etc. They rehearse for the scenes many times, they have medics on hand in case of injuries, etc. Etc.
I think its important to be able to distinguish movies and t.v. From reality.
BTW, I do know that in Jewish wedding ceremonies, they break a glass. But as far as I know, its just one glass.

I should confess that when I originally posted, I went to the wrong section, as it`s not actually a wedding, but a general do, where I`m now posting - but the comments were relevant to both. I`d still like to hear from anyone who`s heard of this event (or preferably one who`s been to one) or anyone who`s any views about it. Cheers.

In what countries is this commonly done? I`m just curious.
