Smashing!
We`re having a do in 2 months time and, as something unusual, we`re considering having a smashing time. We`re thinking of setting an area apart with lots of cheap/unwanted china and stuff and, at midnight, letting the guests come and smash what they want! I`ve heard of it being done before and have wanted to do it for a while, but I`m unsure how to go about it - eg. Would I be able to get stuff sufficiently cheaply?/ Would I be able to get enough unwanted stuff from myself/ other people?/ What about the safety/legal aspects? Has anyone else heard of this kind of thing happening? and has anyone got any thoughts/ideas? Bye. Chris. (prochaxy2@hotmail.com)

Chris, I`m sorry, but I think its very wasteful. That stuff could be donated to charity. There are people who need those things, who cannot afford to buy them. Why don`t you donate them instead?

I see what you mean, Missy, but I think you could say the same about any unessential expense. We could probably all spend less in some way and donate more. There wouldn`t be any room for fun or celebration of any sort if we followed your line of thinking. It`s just another example of fun - albeit a bit unusual - haven`t you ever done something just for self-indulgence?

Chris, its also somewhat dangerous. If you are going to do this, make sure everyone wear safety goggles. Shards of broken china can fly into your eyes. People can get cuts and scratches. No, I doubt its life threatening in anyway, but its still not 100% safe, since you were asking about the legal aspects of it. There are lots of other ways to have fun. This sounds like it would be a better idea for a fraternity party, not a wedding. Sorry, but I just think its an all-around bad idea.

Im just interested in the reason? I must be from some other planet, because I`ve never heard it. What`s the story behind it? Just wondering.....
I also agree about safety goggles!

To Missy and Cece - I can see the objection about the safety aspects - although Greek restaurants seem to get away with it. As for the reason, what other reason can I offer except fun!

Hmmmm....I`ve been to lots of Greek restaurants, and I go to the Greek festival every year, and I`ve never seen this done.
Just make sure its an "adults only" activity, children should not be involved in this, that`s for sure. So, if you are still determined to do it, well go ahead. Its your wedding. Just remember: 1) safety goggles and 2) no kids.

Okay....just wondering. Maybe after you are done smashing beautiful old china, you could take up making Mosaic artwork. You are sure to have plenty, and can make a little money on the side for the house you are saving for!
Sounds like a plan!

Hey Chris
I think it`s really different but might be fun for those who want to participate. I have seen it done many times on TV at weddings and dinner parties and it looked like everyone enjoyed it. Also, I think you are absolutely right about the expense, the ceremony and reception in itself is all a waste to some people considering it is not mandatory or necessary for getting married.
Maybe you can use cheap dinnerware instead of china???

Well, my advice is, its a bad idea to smash up china at a wedding. Just because you see it on t.v. Doesn`t mean its a good thing to do.

She never said she saw it on TV someone else did and if I recall she didn`t ask for opinions she asked for advice on where to get the china.

Well I can`t give advice on where to get the china, because, like someone else said here, I think its dangerous for people to get together and smash up dishes. So I must offer my unsolicited opinion. Sorry.

It sounds like a dangerous idea to me. But I think first you should consult with the facility where your reception will take place and see if they will even allow this sort of thing.

Just wondering, what do you mean "thanks for nothing"? It seems like most people think its a bad idea, but if you really want china, go to the Goodwill store or Salvation Army and get some there cheap. I doubt that anyone will donate their good china or dishes for this. But good luck anyway.

I agree. Smashing dishes is a waste, especially when there are others who need them. I`m sure there are soup kitchen in your area that would like them. A lot of people rely on places like Salvation Army to get their first set of china. If this went on at a wedding, I could not help but be offended.

Thanks, everyone for responding, especially the positive ones. I see the point about the safety aspects, but all I can do is repeat my views - First - Greek restaurants do it, so either they are deemed safe or they have special safety arrangements/permission. About the waste, I can only repeat that every extravagance costs money, which could conceivably be put to better use. I`d like to ask Nodia - Have you actually seen this on TV? - `cos I haven`t - I`ve only heard about it - it would be nice to hear from you.

Do Greek restaurants really smash up dishes??? I would be afraid of getting chips of china or shards of glass in my food. Yikes! I would think this is a health or safety violation that they could get fined for, if anyone knew about it. I will think twice before eating at a Greek restaurant from now on.

I`ve never been to any Greek restaurants that have done this. However, I have seen it done in movies and tv. Chris, where is your reception being held? Is it in a Greek restaurant?
I personally would not do it, but if that`s what you want then you should ask the hall or restaurant. For buying dishes, you can probably go to a discount store like Target or Walmart and get a few sets of inexpensive dishes.

Chris, why ask for people`s opinions if you don`t want to hear them? If you only want people who agree with you to respond then post that you don`t care to hear from people who may not like the idea. Personally I think it is hazardous and a waste. Why smash dishes at a wedding? Fun you say, doesn`t sound like fun to me (Yeah - I got stitches!) . I suggest if you want to smash something then do it at home. I have never heard of people doing this. Probably because it`s weird and not done by anyone with intellegence.
